On the other hand, there are those who look at the same record and say, “Les’ teams play down to their competition; we should never have been down in those games in the first place.

Are there people that really say this or did you make this up?

I have started calling this the Tommy Moffit stat. Dude is the best in the business at what he does and meshes extremely well with what Miles wants to do.

Nope. Saw it several times on the Rant and by LSU posters on the SEC Rant.

Something to that effect in each one of the threads below.

Is this the best record by a coach ever in this category?

the perfect nega response. reality and actual facts support that Miles is a good coach? ignore it.

these are interesting stats to me but, not the most important stat. that would be the comparison of miles to other coaches. lsu is just over .500 whereas the 2nd closest over the same time period is texas at .383. given that texas' opponents are significantly weaker than lsu's, miles' record is just unbelievable. no other coach is even in the same universe in this regard.

it's clear that he has some quality as a coach that he instills in the team that no matter what the score is or what the circumstances are, they still have a chance.

I would say my biggest criticism of miles is that there have been a few years where the season was hanging on the bama game and lsu lost. afterwards, they seemed to quit losing to undermanned ole miss or ark.

Don't necessarily disagree with that. The thread was geared more towards people who say, "Well why were we down in the first place?" I don't think thats an unfair question so I wanted to go back and confirm what I thought. We were down in those games because more often than not we were playing a quality opponent and/or rival. Its fair to say Troy shouldn't be on that list but the others seem to make sense.

I totally agree with your direction here. of course the negas are going to respond that lsu has won despite miles because of talent. we were behind because of bad coaching. this is of course ridiculous because it implies that the sec isn't the toughest conference if a team can maintain elite status over 9 years with a buffoon as a coach. it's an absurd notion that they never acknowledge. they're too busy myopically focusing on the qb and individual play calls.

Good work Damnstrong and Tigerhead. Les has then lost only three games when tied or leading going into the 4th Q because he is 102-26 at LSU, which by my math is 77-3 (again very impressive). My question is who are the three? It has to be SEC teams or a bowl loss(maybe Clemson?), because he has beaten all the OOC teams in the regular season.

Great numbers

The 3 losses when leading or tied starting 4th can't be right.

I think we led beginning of 4th and lost to:

Ten 2005
Kentucky 2007
Ark 2008
Bama 2009
Ole Miss 2009
Clemson 2012

We were also tied at auburn 2010 at near beginning of 4th (12 minutes left so not same as official start of 4th). I think it was Ark 2007 where we were tied going into 4th and lost.

I would be interested to know how many of the 23 losses we were down by more than a TD at the beginning of the 4th (I am guessing 10-15). Not that losing big is a good thing but it would further show that if the game is close, lsu probably wins it.

Insane how many big games Miles has won. I know he's maddening a lot but the body of work is incredible.

Notes: 16 of the 25 were against ranked opponents. 15 of the 25 were against “Big Six” SEC opponents. 1 of the 25 was against a non power 5 team. 9 of the 25 were against unranked opponents. BUT only 8 times did a ranked LSU team have to come back against an unranked opponent (in the 2014 UF game both LSU and UF were unranked). 3 of the instances where LSU had to come back against an unranked opponent were in 2008 and 2009 which were years where LSU arguably shouldn't have been ranked either. 5 of the instances where LSU had to come back against an un ranked opponent were against Ole Miss and Arkansas who both seem to always play LSU tough no matter what the rankings say. 4 of the 25 were actually upset victories against top 10 teams. Another nega-Tiger myth busted?

20 of 25 you listed LSU was ranked higher than the opponent, suggesting we shouldn't have been trailing in the fourth quarter to begin with.

To be 24-23 (not sure where you got 25-23 from) when trailing in the 4th quarter through 128 games (the number of games we've had under Miles) requires, first, that you have to trail in the 4th quarter in 47 of 128 games (about 37% of games). It's great to win the majority of the games when you trail in the 4th quarter. It's not so great to trail in the 4th quarter in 37% of your games. Whatever Bear Bryant's record was when he trailed in the 4th quarter, I'll bet nowhere close to 37% of his games fit the category to begin with.
