re: 2024 Fall Baseball Stats through 10 Scrimmages

How's Cowan looked? He hasn't walked anybody, which sounds like a pitch to contact guy especially given the number of hits. On the other hand, he's fanning hitters at a nice pace. Stat line is hard to read into.
The first weekend scrimmage was his worst and has his overall stats down with the small sample size. He gave up his only free base with a HBP and also gave up 4 hits and 3ER that first scrimmage in only 1.2 IP.
The next 2 weekends he pitched combined he had 5IP, 5H, 1 ER, and 6K.
Still way early in the fall, but to me Cowan, Eyanson, and Guidry will be the top 3 candidates for the Sunday job to start the season. Maybe throw Ware in the mix too but I think maybe they keep him as a LH option out the bullpen instead of a starter.

Soooo are you maybe saying the pitching has been a bit underwhelming in these scrimmages overall?
If so then that’s really disappointing because I was thinking this year will finally be the year that LSU has 3 legit weekend starters with a deep deadly bullpen.
Give it a little time to make any assessment on how good the pitching staff will be. I've said it before but a lot of the tinkering goes on with the pitching this time of year. They are trying to learn different pitches and also tweak some things with the pitches they already have to make better. That is a reason why you see so many walks. Pitching is always down each fall as a whole compared to the spring once the coaching staff can find tune the guys they will utilize in the right spots.

What’d I miss regarding Brady? Is he hurt/transferred what’s that backstory?

Transfer. He will be playing with the Alabama Crimson Tide this season.

Interesting - don’t let the door hit ya especially after the investment of playing him as a freshman

A lot of tinkering and trying new stuff. There is also a lot of adjusting going on for many of the players. A lot of our roster has never played in the SEC. I love the fall stats but we all know that they can change a lot when the season rolls around.
Guidry has been the biggest take away for me. He wears #8 and he is a team leader. He is the type of player that can elevate his team and get them fired up. We can see from the stats how good his pitching has been and it has been consistent for three weekends. I'm not sure a starter role is the best option for our team or if he can even deliver for 6 innings. It is definitely a possibility though.
Ware has been a nice pickup. it's not just the stats, you can see the movement on the pitchers. He is the real deal.
Eyanson is working on new stuff and I believe they are taking it slow with Schmidt, so we don't know how good those guys are yet.
The offspeed and control for a big man from Rizy are impressive.
I'm not worried about Dorsey or Lape just yet. I think it is too early to judge them.
Thompson is interesting to me. He isn't tall and he is skinny. He barely throws 90 MPH from the right side. Since last year, I don't see him as a SEC pitcher but he just keeps proving me wrong. He gets it done with limited tools. He definitely pitches to contact but hitters have a hard time barreling him up. I'm not still completely bought in, but I hope he continues proving me wrong.

Brady Neal looks like Johnny bench catching pitches compared to what I saw on Sunday

Can we play with 4 or 5 outfielders on the field? Lol. Sure looks like a lot of good options. Coach is probably having trouble sleeping. Some tough decisions coming up.

Johnny Bench actually put in effort.

Milam higher avg and obp than Jones. That's surprising

Mayers has not shown much improvement over who he was reported to be (Nuke Laloosh).
13 walks in almost 7 innings. I just don’t think this kid will get over throwing balls.

Same, I was hoping he would be our closer this year. Yikes on those numbers

I don’t understand how he stays in the lineup.
Players will get into slumps and they'll rotate. That's the nice thing about all the depth in the OF. I hope that Pearson's role is a good PH option in the postseason though as the younger guys have higher ceilings

He couldn’t catch a cold all season last year- If the best we got can hit .250 with some power it’s an even trade

The catching position since Jay got here has been rather below average defensively. This is the case in general with Jay, trading defense for offense, which has been successful for us. It just becomes easy to criticize in a year like last year when the offense is lackluster and catchers are sloppy. I also don't think Josh Jordan is a world-beater of a catching coach, but I truly believe anybody we put behind the dish is an upgrade from Brady Neal.

It's why Milazzo defense will be missed
Plus pitchers like to feel comfortable to who they are throwing to as well
