Is it possible that a lot of our issues defensively can be solved by replacing a single player like we did in 2014?

For those who don't recall, the 2014 defense was terribel at the start of the year against Wisky and Mississippi State and then we removed DJ Welter from the field and inserted Kendall Beckwith and we became stout af eventually knocking off #3 ranked Ole Miss in a defensive grudge match.

If we just take Damone Clark off the field and ride with Bugg Strong and Micah Baskerville does anyone think its possible that the defense looks a significant amount better?

I get that we don't have a Beckwith to put in but just removing the guy that is never in the right spot and can't find a crossing route with a map could do wonders for the other 11 players on the field.

It’s not just 18. It’s also safety play too

I hate to say it but Baskerville is part of the problem. I'll go light on Bugg because he just got here.

Blow it up and give me White, Sampah, and Who Mike Jones.

It literally could not be worse

Yes I agree the safeties weren't great but their jobs would be a WHOLE lot easier if the guys in front of them could be trusted to do their jobs.

I also think the safeties were ok until Jay Ward went out. When we get him back I think replacing Clark could be just what the doctor ordered.

Best case scenario; White Sampah and Jones are better

Worst case scenario: they suck and you switch back to Clark Baskerville and Stronn and all the fans know why you play them.

I feel like O plays favorites. They care too much about experience and pet projects vs talent.

#18 actually played well in the 1st half. It was #4 that open the wounds. Then everyone else started falling apart too

Im still curious what may be possible with the likes of Sampah, White, Penn....but trying relatively nothing to change it doesnt seem like a good approach

My thoughts are similar to the safeties: if he can trust the guy next to him to do his job then I think his play would dramatically improve. He flies through hole and makes plays.

IDK if I missed anything but the only time I saw him frick up noticeably was on the long pass which was our DCs fault for having him in man on the outside with no safety help.

I'd say that #4 is 100 times worse than #18 at this point. They both look lost, but Harris is scared to tackle anyone.

In some cases it's a matter of personnel. So who knows, maybe a change here or there will make a difference.

But our problems are not just personnel. They are scheme.

Chief for all the hate he gets on here was a solid DC his entire tenure. I don't think DJ is anywhere near Chief scheme wise.

They all played pretty well for a quarter but then all the bad habits came back. 18 is the one that constantly gets lost in traffic and goes the wrong way.

Yeah but 4 isnt an actual starter. He only played so much because of injuries and the first backup playing bad.

It wasn’t a single player that turned around that defense.

We trotted our Davon Godchaux as a freshman weighing 275 pounds soaking wet at DT with a true sophomore in Christian LaCouture next to him. Quentin Thomas was out with a torn bicep.

It took a lot of growing up for the young guys for that defense to come into its own. Jalen Mills, Jalen Collins, Tre’Davious White, and Ronald Martin grew up quick. Jamal Adams also shined. Kwon was the brightest star next to Beckwith and Deion Jones was finally coming into what we had seen years prior when he was a freshman.

My point is, it was young guys that grew up. Not older guys all around and just Beckwith coming in for Welter. We need a youth movement. Josh White, Antoine Sampah, Roy, Smith, Langlois, Ryan etc all need to be on that field competing.

Like not staying a 4-2-5 when UCLA has 3 TE’s on the field and is damn near lined up in a goal line set. Zero adjustments made.

#18 is by far the worst on the team. I 100% feel we would be much better with anyone but him in the game, and BTW Baskerville is very good!
Some of you idiots have no idea what you are looking at.

I'd argue having a middle Lber that wasn't a complete liability allowed those other guys to improve and step up.

That’s true. I agree with you.

But we need an entire youth movement besides just one player

I agree that the youngins need a shot at LBer and safety. I honestly think the other spots on D are pretty good.

I guarantee we'll find out Saturday because every defensive player is gonna get a look with the ones. It'll be easy to see who is out of position.

Baskerville wasn’t great, but he definitely played hard. Flott surprisingly looked a lot better since bulking up a tad.
