We started 5-0 in 2003. There were no grand expectations really. We came off an average 2002 season with a bowl loss to Texas. But we were 5-0 and had played lights out. Then we lost to Florida 19-7 without an offensive score. We were 5-1 and that was ok. Nobody expected an undefeated season or even a chance at the championship. It wasn’t until another month that people even thought it was possible. But we used that loss as fuel and went on to make it the greatest season of a generation. We exceeded expectations and created greatness. It was fun from start to finish because nobody felt we deserved it or expected it or anything like that. We weren’t a negative fan base yet.

This year we started 5-0. We exceeded expectations with wins over Auburn and Miami. We climbed the polls and became a talking point. Nobody thought we could win 7-8 games at best. But there we were at 5-0 with a few solid wins. Then we we lose to Florida on the road in a tough game where we had some key defensive starters out. We became 5-1 and just like that people everywhere said we were done. We were told we can’t win the big games. So why is it so different now? Why are our fans so spoiled that at the first loss of a season we just give up and become so negative? Is it because people didn’t like the coaching hires? Is it because we can’t beat Bama? Our fans have made it miserable and that needs to end.

I don’t care for the negativity either, but this isn’t a great comparison. In 2003 we hadn’t won a national championship in almost 50 years. We’ve won two since then.

ETA: I guess what I’m saying is that success leads to higher expectations. Hell, if Les Miles replaced DiNardo instead of Satan we probably would have built a statue by now. It is what it is.

I’m excited to see the rest of the season play out, but I also understand why some fans expect greatness given our past 15 years.

Pretty simple. As a fanbase, we didn't know nearly 2 decades of being considered one of the big boys. I remember not too long before 2003 getting excited when LSU was listed in the "others receiving votes" part of the AP poll. We are past that now.

I think it's silly and ridiculous to act like the season is over now. A lot of football to be played.

It's no different than it was with the last coach. It's easy to ignore if you choose to. I'm not sure why people get so upset about it now. Winning cures all.

To be fair, in 2003 we hadn't been lied to by the coaching staff every off season for almost a decade.

But 2003-2018 happened. LSU fans shouldn’t just be grateful to be ranked in the top 25 anymore. We should expect to compete for conference championships. If you want the LSU fans to have expectations they had before 2003, then we will end up with the same success we had during that period.

We weren’t paying a DC 2.5 million and stacking top 5-15 ranked recruiting classes for a decade either. LSU fans deserve to have expectations.

More importantly, the 2003 to 2018 comparisons need to go.

Many wanted Miles gone after the loss to Tennessee on a Monday afternoon in September, 2005.

Almost everyone wanted him gone after the clock debacles.

It's not like everyone had confidence because they're coach was a god of football.
But now we do know what Saban is and was. So comparing O to Saban is not only dumb, it's not fair to O.

Saban was our coach. At the time, he had never had a losing season as a head coach and had already won the SEC by beating a national title contender in Tennessee. By contrast, O has a losing record as a head coach and has literally never won anything of note, much less the SEC and a Sugar Bowl.

I mean, I get what he's saying. We should give O the benefit of the doubt and what not. The 2003 team had beaten a powerful Georgia team by this time and destroyed everyone else when it lost to Florida.

The 2018 team on the other hand struggled against LA Tech and beat a mediocre Auburn team by 1 point. It's much harder to believe this team will beat Georgia or even have a chance against Alabama. Hell, it'll be tough to pull out a win against MSU and aTm. There's nothing we've done this year that says we're anything more than mediocre. And mediocre in my book is unacceptable.

There will be an opportunity to prove otherwise, but until then, we have to go by what has been presented to us.

This is a horrible comparison. LSU had just won the SEC title 2 years earlier under the same coach as in that 2003 season. We weren’t trying to figure out if a failure of a coach was great. We had a coach that had great success everywhere he had been.

We had an x’s and o’s guy in charge and had a great start to 2002 with Malik to push us forward and a great offense with the 2001 team.

There is a huge difference there. Other than the record and losing to UF, there is no comparison. This defense isn’t near 2003’s nor is the offense 1/2 of that team’s.

This team is good not great and very flawed in the coaching realm.
