For the NCAA to up the scholarship count to 100 from 85, in order to keep your 25/year recruiting effort and promises to these young men???

In this form, scholarships could be guaranteed for 4 years. I’m sure there is a laundry list of potential negative unintended consequences to this idea.

Ang go...

It would make more sense to give baseball more than 11.7 scholarships and two paid assistant coaches.

Football (as a whole, not just LSU specifically) could lose 5 scholarships and not blink.

There doesnt need to be more scholarship players in football, if anything there could be less. Look at how crazy the transfer market has gotten.

It would make more sense to reduce the yearly allotment to 20 from 25.

It makes sense, so the NCAA won't go for it.

My kid is dealing with this now. Many offers, but honestly he'll probably stay closer to home because they just don't pay enough. Could have played football in college as well, doesn't have a passion for it. Long term will probably go JUCO and try the draft.

Not if their goal is parity. This would only help the premier programs.

I would actually be in favor of this change. I just don’t see it happening

It doesn’t appear that parity is their goal. In the 5 seasons of the CFP it’s been basically the same few teams.

College football seems ok with the huge lack of parity.

Perhaps not 100 as the major programs would lure too many good players from the mids.

But I been thinking about this as well. NCAA needs to do an analysis of what the natural attrition rate is among all of division 1 football. At the 85 limit, 15% of scholarship recipients cannot finish. A small percentage of that comes from early declarees. A larger chunk comes from student-athletes who choose to leave the sport or who don't have what it takes to make it 4 years. Then there are probably some who get caught in the system and are forced out.

Probably about 90 would be good, but it really depends on the percentage of attrition that can be expected over a 4 year span.

So you propose giving CFB (men) 15 more scholarships. Guess what will happen ? ... the Title IX supporters will come out of the woodwork demanding equal number of scholarships be given to women. Is LSU then gonna have to create a Women's rowing, bowling, or field hockey team ? Those 15 proposed scholarships could turn into 30 total scholarships which will cost each University and NCAA more money.

On a separate but somewhat related note, Title IX forced LSU to terminate it's wrestling program in 1985. LSU dominated the SEC and would have won the NCAA National Championship in 1986 had the program stayed together.

Radical idea

Make scholarships 3 years guaranteed out of high school. School and player has to commit for those 3 years. After 3 years the player/school can decide on transfer/release with no restrictions on where the player can go for last year (or two if redshirted). No signing limit each year but have to stay under the 85. Since you have guys that will be guaranteed to be under scholarship this will limit the number of signees on its own.

This would probably open those 3 year guys to free agency but we are pretty close to that at this point now.

I do not expect this to be implemented and I don’t even know if it is a good idea but it is an idea.

If he's getting D1 offers, but not the type of money he wants, JUCO is a great alternative. If he's academically qualified out of high school, it keeps his options open to transfer to a 4 year school after 1 year.

There are a ton of great baseball JUCOs all over the southeast. Look up @flatgroundapp on twitter if he's a pitcher or flattgroundbats (not sure if that's the exact handle) if he's a position player. They are twitter feeds for guys to get video out there for free to be scouted by coaches from all over. Read up on the twitter feed first, because it gives tips on how to format the videos. There are also coaches and major leaguers that will respond to videos from time to time with advice.

Title IX would be the main issue.

Mid-majors and lesser P5 schools may be reluctant to make the corresponding investment into women's sports that generate no revenue.

No. 25 is the maximum number in a given year. No one is forcing you to sign that many. If you want to commit 4 years to a student you will not over sign. You can give 100 scholarships to football and some programs will still be processing players.

Only way the 100 would work is if teams were firmly held to 100 scholarship limits over 4 years. Meaning over any 4 year period each school can give no more than 100 initial counter scholarships. Attrition would take the number down and at that point only transfers, as no longer initial counters, could make up the difference.

I think 85 is plenty.

We are flying up to Boston to look at Curry College. Little known school. They are offering him basically everything but lodging. He will be close to the Cape so he will get that experience if he decides to go there. In total there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 104k in aid. Puts him closer to 5-6k out of pocket per year if he chooses the 4 year route. He could ultimately transfer if he gets homesick.

I don't like the fact that he will be that far away. He is clocking his fastball around 90-92 currently. He is still growing at 18. 6'0 180lbs. Kid is phenomenal athlete. Really will be his decision. The JUCO is certainly not for grades he's been accepted to several in State Schools in Georgia. To me it might keep him closer to home and not have a ton of student debt coming out if it doesn't work out for him in the draft. It really is down to money and they just don't give enough in baseball. He could walk on, but ultimately he seems to be getting much better financial arrangements out of state.

Thank you for the suggestion ProjectP2294

If they go to an 8team playoff, they may want to increase it to at least 90.
