I know Maurice Clarett challenged it in 2003, but the court upheld the NFL’s rule. I’m just wondering if over 20 years later the NFL will change the rule given today’s completely different climate; or perhaps a judge will reverse the ruling and force the NFL to change the rule.

This won’t happen unless college football (or the players via lawsuits) start fricking with the NFL’s business. Changing the eligibility rules could upset the balance if players can suddenly stay with a “college” team for 10 years and a collective pays them more than they would get in a rookie contract.

Today, the NFL and college football have a symbiotic relationship and everyone benefits. The NFL gets this without the cost and hassle or running or propping up a secondary league that won’t make money, so I’m sure they are thrilled. Unless their money starts being affected, there is no current reason for the NFL to change the status quo.

You bring up the G-League, but remember that basketball rosters are 15-17 players and each team has a much smaller staff. The cost and logistics to run that league are a drop in the bucket for what it takes to run a real football league. It’s not even close.

no of course not. why would the NFL get rid of their free farm system? and then why would the NFL players union get rid of the 3 year gap rule? this rule benefits the players as it keeps the competition lower (fewer bodies, higher pay)

I appreciate the well-thought out and informed post, bro.

Most people just give jackass replies.

They could potentially be forced to let high school kids in if their rule ever gets challenged again in court and struck down.

unlikely as this is collectively bargained

College football is becoming more and more a semi-pro football league and less and less amateurish. It seems like it could benefit the league if they would let kids enter the draft out of high school and then let them play in a “G-League” just like the NBA has.

If it doesn’t pay as well as college, why would a high schooler go to the g-league?

Won’t ever happen unless all the top players unionize and refuse to play college ball anymore. Then that rule would go the way of the dodo bird immediately.

The thing is, like in baseball, most players have it far better at a quality college program than they would at some minor league NFL program. Man some of those minor league baseball facilities are straight garbage and they generally have to travel by buss. It ain’t like the majors where they get to fly a personal jet to away games.
