re: Why does Louisiana produce so few good QB prospects?

Stan Humphries and Bubby Brister were on the same college roster.
Bobby Hebert was maybe a year or two ahead of them.
LA produces good QB's.
How about Robert Lane? -- j/k with that one.

So you think it's bad HS coaching that leads to few LB recruits in La? That surprises me. Do you think guys who should be stud LBs are instead put at DE?
I think it's definitely part of the reason. While much of playing LB is based on instincts, a lot of it is based on the ability to quickly diagnose what's going on and react to it. The read and react skills aren't being honed by the jackelgs coaching defense in the state, by and large.
I do agree that playing guys out of position also is to blame. Putting guys with LB potential at DE or DT doesn't help with their development, and puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to being recruited if they're undersized for those positions on the next level.

Brock Berlin was pretty damn good in high school.

He wasn't a Louisiana Man...a transplant as I remember...

Joe Ferguson went to Arkansas the same year Bert Jones went to LSU.

Holy Cross has a freshman that started all season this year, Chandler Fields, that will be very heavily recruited in the next couple of years

Ideally.. we move to a single back offense.. stop giving scholarships to fullbacks.. and fill the roster with 2-3 more QBs in their place

Don't forget Kevin Faulk. He was the QB for Carencro when they won a state championship.

All from the Woodlawn breed stock of Laird, Prather, Bradshaw, Ferguson and Booty.

Over the years Louisiana has produced many great quarterbacks. LSU has not got many to go there.

Like anything else, it's a combination of a number of factors. Yes, the state of TX produces an amazingly large number of college fb QB's. Last year "College Game Day" did a segment that said 1/5 BCS starting QB's at that time played high school fb in TX. Having said that, while LA produces it's fair share of QB's, LSU gets very few of them. There are different reasons for this, but LSU's style of offense seems to be the real reason. None of the Evangel QB's have ever gone to LSU (except Josh Booty, AFTER he'd failed at Major League Baseball) because of our offense. Did anyone here ever think we really had a shot at the Patterson kid? I sure didn't. I don't recall LSU ever being seriously considered by the Manning's. I doubt LA high school coaches are across the board worse coaches than the vast majority of coaches elsewhere. And the practice of putting your best athlete at QB is not a practice unique to LA. High school coaches nearly everywhere do the same thing, especially w/ the popularity of the spread option offense. Last, LSU has missed out on the evaluation of instate high school prospects, case in point, Dak Prescott. The year we didn't recruit him, we instead recruited Steve Rivers!
And a number of the NFL QB's from LA mentioned earlier weren't recruited by LSU, either. Don't forget to add Doug Williams to the list of NFL QB's from LA, as well.

None of them are making it to the pros. Sorry, but gimmick teams aren't winning titles with athletes at qb.

- Acadiana won 5A last year with a Texas Tech LB Kevin Moore at QB.
- Warren Easton nearly won 4A with Texas A&M CB Capers-Smith last year.
- Livonia won 3A with a 5'8 160 lb "athlete" Cee Jay Powell last year.
- Many won 2a last year with ULM safety Xavier Dias at QB.
- Haynesville won 1a last year with Arkansas LB Kendrick Jackson at QB.
I could go on and on, but you get the idea teams that just put their best athlete at QB in Louisiana win their fair share of titles, especially in the lower classes.

Bruce Feldman wrote a very interesting book on quarterbacks. Essentially says that being a modern qb is the equivalent of having your kid learn to play the piano or violin. Tons of time and money (dont recall the exact figure he puts out there). I feel like most of these "athletes" playing qb in LA dont have the resources that kids in TX and CA have. Not everyone can afford to send their kid to George Whitfield or Steve Clarkson. The in-state qb talent is very raw and our current coaching staff doesnt seem to have a clue how to develop a young qb. LINK

Another reason is it seems some of them choose baseball (Zach Lee, Josh Booty, etc.)
Zach Lee was from McKinney in DFW area (you know the city where the suburb LEO did a barrell roll at the pool party & grabbed a girls hair?)
