re: Why do y’all care so much about stars and recruiting rankings?

I don’t disagree. Of course they do on the 5 stars because they have been seen so many times by so many different people. Those guys are highly coveted by all the top schools. The difference that should be obviously weighed at this point during these arms race times, the portal and NIL changes everything which either hurts or sets off a class.
We seem to be better prepared over the last two cycles. This ain’t over fellas. The portal adds will be glorious.

Exactly

I don’t think we are arguing against each other. There is very little difference between 1-5. The team that finished the last 4 years ranked 20-40 isn’t a championship team.

I think there is minimal difference in 1-10. Especially if the player averages are similar.
For example Clemson has historically had very low attrition, so they have signed lower numbers of players.
Their player average was high, but overall number low due to signing fewer players.

Well, that's just rude.
Has anybody from here gone to your Knitting Board and asked everyone why they care so much about yarn?

No argument there. You can be Saban and turn and burn 1-50 or Dabo and and keep 50-100 and have similar results.

Florida had that same mentality under the last two head coaches. How did that turn out?

Statistically you have to push for higher stars. The metrics don't lie. What I love about Louisiana is there are a lot of outliers within the state.

We care because the teams that dominate college football - Bama, Ohio and Georgia - get the highest rated classes.

The way I look at it is with NIL you only going to get who you are going to get. Obviously the Ricks dude already wanted to go to Alabama so no matter what we did he was going to go there an they was going to match anything we could match. So crying over it is just dumb. You want to beat Alabama in recruiting you gotta go out there an beat that arse again an show these kids LSU is going to be a consistent winner under Kelly and Bama isn’t shite. Once we establish ourselves we will start climbing into the top 3 every year again in recruiting and get rid of this Alabama groupie syndrome.

I'd rather start a hand of poker with pocket kings than a pair of 3s, but yeah, I guess I could still end up losing the hand.

Because LSU plays in the SEC.
Look at the teams that represent the SEC in the playoffs lately and tell me their recruiting rankings. Especially if you want to consistently get there.

It really isn't hard to understand. The teams that consistently bring in the top classes or loaded classes with 5 stars, are the teams most frequently at the top. Every now and then it doesn't work out or a lesser talented team on paper surprises everyone. For the most part, the top 3-4 in recruiting rankings are competing for playoffs every year. If LSU would have finished number 1, it would have all of the sudden meant everything to everyone lol

Recruiting rankings matter. Stars matter .
You do have your exceptions obviously but stars definitely mean something
Why you think teams who recruit the highest win the most a majority of the time.

In fact, LSU never had a #1 class in that time span. So, I think the most important thing is to have a class at or near the top five AND address your needs with those classes, rather than just racking up 5 star players.
Yes sir. It’s not like BK has never done this. Granted he hasn’t at this level or in the SEC but they are working it and look ready when something doesn’t go there way

Let’s get 25 one star guys and see what happens!

Sometimes it’s legitimate, sometimes it’s fool’s gold, but it’s always an educated guess by a myriad of services (Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports, etc.) looking to pry money out of fans obsessed with recruiting rankings.
Buy it if you must. Just be mindful of the biggest X factor of all in recruiting, which gets totally ignored on signing day: player development.
If having more star players mattered, the Florida Gators would be a perennial top 10 team. They get the stars, they don’t get the development.
Coaching staff and culture matter a LOT more than the number of 5 star players you sign.
