Why do y’all care so much about stars and recruiting rankings?

Really, it comes down to a handful of players in each class that make up the starting 22. Looking at Bama 2018 recruiting ranked #5 by 247 their best players were Surtain, Waddle, Slade Bolden.

In contrast, LSU’s 2018 class ended up ranked 15, but our best players were T. Marshall, Chase, Rosenthal, Clark, D Lewis, J. Jenkins, so LSU despite being ranked lower tied or an argument can be made we had a better class. We definitely had the best prospect in Chase.

LSU developed chase and Burrow enabled him. He was by no means the “best prospect”

When a kid is ranked 5 stars they have a real chance to be special

Harold Perkins
Will Campbell

Might have heard of those two guys.

Yep

Do you legit think if Chase went to another school he wouldn’t have “developed”

He was rated the 15th best WR in his class. Despite what he did in college, regarding recruiting rankings he wasn’t anywhere close to the best prospect

There’s really no telling. LSU has a pedigree of producing stud WR’s. Look at JJetts and his recruiting ranking

Because the numbers make it obvious - 5 stars are substantially more likely to be impact players and make the NFL, followed by 4 stars, then 3 etc.

The more of those you have, the higher your class ranking, and the higher the likelihood that you find those impact players.

I’ve got no issue with our class, but the stars and rankings matter quite a bit.

Chase would have crushed it at any SEC school with a decent qb. He would have killed it at OSU or OU. We had the best qb in the country, so the stars lined up perfectly.

So does a kid with 2 stars and 3 stars like Jefferson and Burrow.

And scouts? Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely diamonds in the rough and we lucked out in 2019 with those players. But let’s not act like we should start heavily recruiting 2/3/4 stars instead of trying to get 5 stars. 5 stars have a better chance at being special and making the league. It’s math

Because history shows that teams with the top recruiting classes year over year are the ones that win consistently. The perfect is not the enemy of the good. 5* succeed at a higher percentage than 4* who succeed at higher percentage than 3* etc.

Cool exceptions, but they’re still exceptions.

Chase was the #1 WR taken despite sitting out an entire season and was NFL offensive rookie of the year. IDC, what the so called recruiting said, Case was the top WR coming out of HS.

There’s a reason Bama, OSU, Georgia are filled with 4 and 5 stars and consistently in the playoffs. Yes, developing the player certainly matters but if that is all that matters then recruit some local 3 stars that would love to play at Bama. They’d commit as soon as offered and it wouldn’t take a bag of cash. Why wouldn’t that work? Well there are other guys with more talent. Who are those guys? They’re the four and five stars.

He was the 12th ranked wide receiver coming out of high school. Out of roughly 32,000 high school senior wide receivers they had him just outside the top 10. I’d say they did pretty good.

You are naming the outliers. Stack up the 4 and 5 stars on one side and the 2 and 3’s on the other and see what side had more.

Ah another post about stars dont matter but usually the top 5 in college football usually starts with the top 5 in the recruiting rankings. Que the Justin Jefferson reference that everyone likes to point to not being a 4 or 5 star but forget about the 70% of the 3 stars that never get a start in their career at top fbs schools.

With the portal now a lot of the 3 stars that used to become starters as Jr's and Sr's at the school they originally signed with are leaving making it more difficult. So even more important now to get 5 star talent like campbell and perkins not 3 or 4 year projects.
