What does preferred walk on mean and why not just offer him a scholarship.

A preferred walk on is a recruited athlete who in on the 105 man roster. He just doesn't have a scholarship. Otherwise, he is treated as a team member just like a scholarship player. The 85 scholarship limit forces choices. 20 of the 105 can't be on one. If we miss on some of the guys on 2/3, maybe they'll give him one.

He must have heard that it's working for Harbaugh.

These types of players are way underrated. He is a big ILB with great instincts and he has "Football" skills, so he is an athlete and a football player. Reason why some of these top recruits tank is grades and they don't get the game.

I like this guy a lot and I think we should just offer him a full scholarship.

It really sounds like he is a diamond in the rough. Always love the West Monroe athletes, they are tough competitors, use to playing and winning championships, and they all seem to have a real love for LSU, they grow up that way. Except that gump OT that went to gumpville, 2 yrs ago. I say come on Layton, and give him a full ride.

JJ27,

I was told a story about Brian West's recruitment and I was wondering if you had heard something similar....fyi, this was from a former WMHS pitcher that played and coached at LSU (I'm sure you know him), so I trusted the source...

Essentially, it went that he had interest in playing both sports at LSU, but Skip basically told him that he didn't want a big, "fat" defensive end up there lumbering around his pitcher's mound...I'm thinking Skip knew he was going to be drafted high enough to sign (which he did), and didn't want to waste his time. Anyway, I just thought it was kind of funny how honest and blunt Skip could be with kids, and maybe that's why West ended up signing with Texas A&M and taking Ledoux with him.

Ok, sorry for thread hijack.

Brian and Jason signed with A&M with another childhood friend Andy Slocum. Slocum was a basketball player that ended up in the WWE. I believe another friend went as well, but didn't sign. I never heard the Skip story. That fat DE could bump 98. Pretty sure he could've helped LSU on the mound.

DiNardo and losing was a major reason they went to A&M.

Make no mistake, I didn't consider him fat. I saw him rip a shot to the gap against Ouachita and leg out a double, and he was FLYING. I played Juco baseball, and our pitching coach was a scout for the White Sox, and had a major influence in their decision to sign West. Also, the million bonus was an influence. Crazy, I know.

Bottom line is Layton is a good kid and a player. I would say he goes to LSU if given the opportunity. Hopefully he will do well at LSU or wherever he goes. Good luck to him!

If they offer him a full ride, I can't blame him with Aranda running the D. If no scholly, he should go to ULM.

Layton stated that Aranda told him he wanted big ILB to plug the gaps against the run. We are running a 3-4 going forward, we are going to need lots of LBers.

Not Mr. Fawcett, but an LSU linebacker in early 2000s that used to break necks on special teams.

an old TD thread about him and Robert Peace getting into it

So he told Layton we would run a 3/4 and Lawrence a 4/3? Hmmm
