Ryan O'Neal & Robert Peace

OK, I need for somebody to fill me in on something that happened during the LSU-Tennessee game in 2000 between these two players. I've been trying to piece this together for a while now but nobody ever has any idea what I am talking about.
I was told by somebody who was at that game that something nasty went down between these two guys. What was it? My memory of those two is that Peace was a star LB from Ruston High that turned his nose up at LSU and bolted for Tennesse while O'Neal was a lightly recruited LB out of Jesuit that eventually walked on at LSU and was a special team star.
Just speculating, but did it (whatever "it" is) have anything to do with these two players going head to head in high school in the state semi-finals a couple of years earlier when Jesuit played Ruston? The only reason that I rememeber this is because Catholic played West Monroe in the other semi-final that same year and I was excited about the prospect of a Catholic/Jesuit matchup in the Dome. Of course, both CHS and Jesuit lost and the 5A final was a district 2-5A slugfest.
Ah, I digress. In any case, can anybody fill me in on this?

Maybe O'Neal lit his arse up on a special teams play....that guy was a special team kamikaze demon. In the section I sat in, we used to watch him specifically on what he was going to do on special teams everytime they took the field.
I did hear Peace flipped off the LSU fans as he was exiting the stadium, but I didn't see it.

Thats basically it. Ryan did clock him good on one special teams play. Peace jawed with some LSU fans at one point in the game and supposedly flipped them off.
Some LSU fans like to tell it that Peace was jawing all day at LSU players and fans and that Ryan took offense and took him out.
Not that I wouldn't mind that being true, Peace was a little bitch, snubbing LSU withstanding.

I bet that was it. The thing about Peace flipping off the crowd is true. I heard that from multiple attendees of the game. It was something specific between the two players that I was wondering about, though.

O'Neal was a maniac...he'd run down the field on kickoffs with reckless abandon.
He wasn't afraid to scrap in the bar either. I seem to remember him being escorted out by a few people in Tigerland bars on more than one occasion.

The following has little to do with your story but is an interesting fact: Peace was likely headed to LSU had Saban not botched his recruitment. Saban came in and didn't now Roberts name, and kept calling him Ray. Not only that, he rubbed many of the local coaches the wrong way when he 1st came in because he was unapproachable and seemed smug.

Very interesting. It's a minor detail but it certainly fits in well with my "Myth and Reality" theory about Nick Saban and LSU. I'm going to save that for it's own thread at some other time because this board has too much Little Nicky traffic as it is.

That is because he KNEW he would never see the field at LSU because of Bradie James, Trev Faulk, and Jeremy whaever. He was not good enough and never touched the NFL.

It was Jeremy Lawrence and I beg to differ about his not being good enough to SIGN with LSU. He ended up being not so good once he got to college but he was a star in high school and would have had a schollie at LSU if he had wanted one.

Rocket, did you have a mancrush on Ryan O'Neal?
Posted on 5/18/08 at 10:16 pm to Doc Feelgood
Thats Jeremy Lawrence from Ferriday I believe. As for Peace not being good enough...wrong. If he had redshirted he most certainly would have helped LSU after Faulk went pro prematurely.

No. I certainly can't say the same for you and Xavier Abidi though.

Aight, what about you and Richard Murphy?

My wife went to high school with him. He is a spoiled little bitch who was average at best at Ruston. THE ONLY REASON he played big time college ball is because his dad was the coach at La. Tech and had friends in the Tennessee network!!
fact fact fact!!!

Peace was good enough to play at LSU. And he did not just get into Tennessee because his father was Joe Raymond Peace, the former head coach at Louisiana Tech.
His father is not a big LSU fan, which probably had a lot to do with the decision to snub the state school.
