Thats not how this works. Its like an auction but your assets are also for sale whether you like it or not.
So, if you "only need 5" and you out bid me, then I know youre over leveraged and ill just start taking from your roster bc you cant afford to retain.

That is just to get to an 85 man roster. Funny thing was a yr or two ago when the talk was 105 man scholly roster nobody figured that the programs dont want that because it is just more people to pay.

Quick count shows about 44 +/- still on roster. Add the 14 high school kids gets us to 58/59 w/the portal still open. If the final roster is somewhere between 85 to 105, u do the math.

Look at the recruiting classes just in the top 15. Nine of the top 15 signed at least 24 players. Only 3 teams signed under 21 and two of them had to replace coaches (Florida, LSU).
Not every team is losing 20+ players. Some teams are losing 30 and 40 players, but teams like UGA and Bama are losing a total of 19 (7 and 12 respectively). Now that number could reach closer to 25-26 total, but that's it. Last year, of the top 25 portal team rankings, 18 teams brought in 23 or less with 12 (basically half), bringing in 20 or less.
The overhauls are only coming from certain teams:
1. Teams that had a HC change
2. Teams that usually go heavy in the portal anyway.
Truth is, what LSU is doing is definitely abnormal. Last year Lane brought in 50 players between the portal and high school recruiting. He lost a ton from that 2024 team. LSU will not have to bring in anywhere close to 28-30 players in the portal next year.
