I don't understand why a private high school would actively give spots to athletes who are mediocre or even bad students. If you are on the board of a school like this, why would you care about having a top flight high school football team? Obviously lots of schools do it. But in all seriousness, why? I get it at the NCAA level, but for high school, it makes no sense to me.
I actually don't understand this either.
The current leadership at U-High has been determined, for the last 10 years, especially, to ramp up its athletics for some reason.
That seems unusual for a school that has always emphasized academics... and has a waiting list a mile long to get into, because of those academics. U-High would not even have to have an athletics program at all to still be a high-demand school. It does not need an athletics program to retain the students that are there. So why the emphasis on athletics?
It would be akin to Baton Rouge High suddenly deciding to build an athletics tradition. I get that U-High has always had sports, but my question is why is it important for that particular school to be an athletics powerhouse now, that recruits kids for athletics? Am I missing something here?

Think about the power, money, and pride the parent's of these kids that attend U-High. They grew tired of their sons/daughters sports teams sucking. They want their kids to win championships and they're the ones footing the tuition for these stud athletes (especially football). You think Gordon McKernan wants his son to play QB for a team that completely sucks? Hell no, having his son play on a team with 10+ D1 players makes his son look better and gets him in the papers and some trophies.. Not that difficult to understand.
I'm just wondering when it will back fire on them. You get a parent with a son/daughter that's not playing because there's so much talent they're pulled in from around BR that they get pissed off. It's bound to happen

For the price, UHigh has good academics. However if you are trying to compare them to other private schools in BR/Nola strictly off of performance, their academics are overrated.

Do you do any analysis or just have poor comprehension skills?
I looked at 247 and the U high kids. After reading what was said about each it was apparent that you don't have a clue about recruiting.
CHRISTIAN HARRIS-247 says LSU-57%,
Bama 29%, A&M 14%
MAKIYA TONGUE-247 says Texas 100% and NO LSU OFFER.
JORDAN CLARK-247 says top 3 offers are
MS. STATE, OLE MISS, USM. NO LSU OFFER.
Clark is a 3 star 5'11"/168# Cornerback.
That was the top 3 and I stopped reading because the post by the OP was obviously wrong. LSU offered only 1 of the top 3 U-High kids and LSU leads for him. Nowhere near the situation described by the OP.

In BR the only other private schools that may "beat" them in academics are CHS, SJA, and Episcopal.

I would agree with that. I was just pointing out that many UHigh kids and parents think the education there is second to none, when it actually isn't.
Also, many of those athletes at UHigh sit in a program called "resources" where they receive extra help and time with their school work/test. It's pretty much a high school version of the academic help LSU athletes receive in college.

This is actually available at all schools pending they qualify for 504 accommodations. Unless you are speaking of study hall which I think all seniors get.

I'm not referring to study hall. I'm referring to the 504 accomodations program UHigh calls "resources", and the fact that quite a few of their top athletes just happen to qualify for it. Makes sense though. I'd imagine it would be quite hard to make your grades there after transferring from some BR public school without tutors and other forms of help.
I'm not saying it is a bad thing. It just is what it is.

You don't become the #1 HS team in the state, especially ours, without talent who can play anywhere.
I thought we were talking about UHifh and not Curtis?

There does appear to be a problem there, but I'm sure we are after the ones we want unless they have told us that there is no chance
When was the last time we had a player from U high. We got southern lab players on our roster but I can't remember the last U high, Big Baby Davis was in basketball. But I can't think of a football player.

Nicholas Brossette and Garrett Brumfield are on the current roster and are from U high.

are you saying 1 year makes you the best program in the state?

My boys played with 4 you mentioned and the only surprise out of those (knowing all the circumstances) was Dylan. His Dad was quite critical of the midget to me several times over the years, somehow $atan swayed him. Have to wonder if Aranda had arrived earlier if this would have changed. There is the factor of getting away from campus and BR, but it hasn’t effected the BB recruiting. One thing it isn’t (at least in the day) is a lack of effort recruiting over there.

Link?
Obviously those that judge academics on a national basis don’t agree with you.
These Folks Think You’re Wrong

Just a question... Does anyone else remember when UHigh didn't recruit their arse off and was just another football team in BR? Up until around seven years ago they were lucky to just have one kid in the top 25. Now each year they have some stud they brought in.
They’ve replaced Catholic high, cherry picking north Baton Rouge for talent.

UHigh was the best in the state in 2017. They probably will be again in 2018

So you shared a link telling me UHigh is the 7th best public school in a state that ranks second to last in public school education?
This year UHigh had two national merit finalist. Episcopal, who has less students per graduating class, had eight. Catholic had five. The only public school in Baton Rouge that competes with/beats Episcopal, Catholic, and SJA in academics is BRHMS.
UHigh
Episcopal
Catholic

The last 4 years in football has been driven by the current QB's father.. The kid is a solid QB but he also has the best Line in the state.
Personally dont have a problem with schools using Athletics as a selling point but Ive heard some mixed results from parents about Uhighs situation.
