Trouble in Portal?

Are we having an issue trying to recruit the top dogs out of the portal, or are we not trying to get these guys? I’m just having a hard time finding these top guys going to the inferior schools over LSU, especially at the DB position when everyone and their mother KNOW we need the help. To be specific, how can a top corner like Nyland Green choose a school like Purdue over LSU when he knows that he can come in and start game 1 and compete for a title?

It’s just about money. Half of those guys will be back in next year after they don’t produce and don’t get paid. Some will be superstars. Etienne at UGA is going to be a superstar.

Ya, no one wants to come to LSU

It’s all about money. LSU collective is a mess and seems like there is no structure.

I would assume we aren’t really going after certain people. BK seems content with some of the talent we have and is trying to grow the team organically. This may be good for us in the long run… players like Toviano, Stamps, and Yaites got some great experience this year. If we can get JK and Zy back next year we will be in a good spot next year imo.
Also don’t think BK is too excited to spend so much NIL $ on rentals anymore.

Retention is the way this year

It’s not that the staff is having trouble, it’s that they aren’t out there targeting many players.
Very few visits have been set up for portal players
CBK is a bargain bin portal shopper. He waits until the 50% off sale starts before he really gets going.
Yeah he’ll spend a little on a MSU WR and a Vandy QB but he waits until the deals are just right before he strikes

None of this is true. Kelly has been saying the the past 2 seasons that his intent is to get to a point where we are focused on building through recruiting rrom HIGH SCHOOL and devoting them into great players. Prior to this recruiting class, we had less-than-full rosters, so we had to fill a lot of spots with via the portal. Now, we are in a position where we already have a full roster. This signing class already put us over the roster limit. Thankfully, we don't have to worry about getting Dien to that number until the summer. But that dies kean we have to be very picky with whomever ekse we add.
Despite what the rant thinks about the players we have, the staff feels pretty good about most of the players on the roster as far as what they can be developed into. Don't expect too many more additions via the portal.

What are your coaching credentials? Playing Xbox or PlayStation or coaching travel ball with your flatbill cap and White oakleys does not equate to you knowing a single thing about major college football.
Neither does you working at Burger King.

It is hard to recruit the portal when you don’t have any roster spots! Not that many players leaving!

Kelly said when he got here he didn’t want to use the portal unless necessary. Here we are year 3 and it’s happening. It’s not the way to put together a program. Good for ole miss. They had some money to spend and they are playing for next year. It may work it may not. But I for one will be watching. If it doesn’t work the melt will be glorious

Without portal players where is the defense going to be better? Its like we’ve accepted the fact that we will be below average again next year!

Did we have any issues pulling top 2-3 portal classes the previous two seasons? Not even close. The money is being directed elsewhere at the moment.
Kelly has repeatedly said they aren’t looking to add a lot of guys through the portal. And right now, we have no way to. We have over 90 on the roster until we find out who else leaves in the portal and which juniors besides the obvious are going to the Draft.
Also, remember that Kelly said recruiting will take precedence going forward. Flipping Echols came late in the game. They are also at least have a shot at flipping McKinley and Bussey from A&M in Feb. If one or both of those happen, that’s up to 3 spots that would have gone to guys from the portal that would instead go to late recruiting adds.
As for money, you can bet some of it’s been going to retention. If Wingo and Smith stay, it’s because they’ve been paid to. You can bet Nuss was last year. I’m sure Perkins has also been incentivized to ignore the offers that come his way.
I have a feeling the staff will look for a CB and DT in the 2nd portal period. That’s after the rest of the roster is completely settled and the new staff members are in place. They will know exactly how much space they have to work with then.

I guess that explains the two 3 portal classes the two previous years. You are so full of shite, but like most trolls, I’m sure you already know that.

I know it is a different sport and a different time, but:
John Wooden's mantra was that "the best thing about a freshman is that next year they become sophomores". That is building from within with patience.
Kelley has always sold the process and the character of players. He must be a firm believer in the cohesion that develops year over year amongst players. Two years is not enough time to lay judgment when the focus has been building for the long run.
Remember when LSU had a huge lead in their season opener at North Carolina about a decade ago. Les Miles played a slew of freshman in the second half and the lead nearly imploded. Those freshman included players like Tyrann Mathieu. We experienced the same reality in the second half of the 2023 season with the backfield.
Lets see how those players grow over the Spring and into next fall. If those players are an epic fail, then it will be a time to question LSU's recruiting assessments.

Maybe the coach that LSU is paying $10 million a year to win games realized that it's more beneficial to give more time to talented, highly ranked younger recruits to learn the system than to plug in lesser talented, more experienced players and expect them to master it with only 15 Spring practices under their belt before Summer camp starts in August?

If only Brian Kelly would hold a press conference and address this.
Oh, wait ....

You can't win with portal recruits. LSU needs a strong high class to win.
