Was a 3-year starter at UCF at center

6'4 295

Was 2nd team All-AAC this year by the coaches

PFF overall grades by year:

2020 - 58.6
2021 - 75.6
2022 - 83.7

Looks like a really good player

If measurables are correct, he looks to be the same size as Turner. I understand he might be better, but I think the point of coaches being interested in upgrading that position is to make us bigger there.

I'm okay with us not heavily pursuing a C if they can't get an absolute top grade guy. Turner is decent he just struggles with bigger lineman. Martinez though, has looked really good in his limited opportunities. Both games this year he looked better than Turner to me. I'm kinda surprised he isn't the starter over Turner tbh.

We have a C in this class and Martinez, who has looked like an upgrade over Turner and would have the option of a 6th year. You only take this guy or the one from Cincy if you know they are a significant upgrade.

When making the move to Turner, Kelly said it was because he could snap AND handle all the little details like making protection adjustments. Dellinger struggled with both of those things in week one.

It’s possible it just took time for Martinez to pick all of this up too, but he it looked like he had it all down in his two starts. The fact that he’s one of the few older reserve OL who didn’t transfer out tells me he knows he’s in the running to start there next season.

Yeah, which makes me wonder where Dellinger places. He's pretty athletic I'd imagine he transfers out if he doesn't nail a spot down. Maybe slide Emery inside and him outside or Dellinger to the inside? I don't know. Shouldn't be hard to find a spot for him.

Injuries certainly got Delly off track this year. If he’s healthy, he could potentially beat out Bradford or Frazier for a starting G spot. At worst he’s probably your first guy off the bench.

It will be interesting to see if Heard is as ready as many think. If so, that may move Jones inside to one G spot. I can’t imagine him coming off the field after starting this season.

Let’s not use Purdue as a benchmark….competition won’t hurt

Bradford played really well this year among the interior guys, good to see him finally play a whole season and look solid. If he is back hard to see him taking a back seat with his experience, size and being the best interior guy from this year.

I would move Emery Jones inside, he's just not a tackle. If Heard is as good as advertised that's an upgrade at RT. Or even if Campbell got bumped by Heard out there too (not completely impossible as Heard is even more projectable than Campbell as a LT and Campbell played great this year to not take anything away from him).

I think the competition right now at center is between Turner, Martinez and Dellinger personally. Clearly the coaches have thought about adding to that with Renfro being flirted with.

Worst case we will have a lot of solid options on the OL next year.

Spinning off him being one of the top transfer lineman, how do we judge Miles Frazier this year? He and Tremond Shorts were two of the highest rated portal lineman last year. Shorts turned into something of depth piece for his one year but Frazier got more playing time. I don't have access to any PFF numbers though.

I think that's a relevant discussion when we talk about this guy from UCF or Renfro from Cincinnati. Last years transfers were highly rated in the portal and we'll rated in the PFF metrics, how'd they do making the transition to a level up.

Both Frazier and Shorts had their struggles moving up to the SEC, especially Shorts. Everyone assumed he would likely start coming in and he was a backup from day one.

Does anyone know if Shorts is sticking around? He was listed as a senior, but did he have a COVID year remaining? Just curious if he will be around for depth next year.

Frazier was pretty solid, he started and played a lot.

Shorts was completely out of shape and thats what held him back the most. Unfortunate for him because this was his last year of eligibility and he spent it in the buffet line a little too much.

The moment Turner went out and Martinez came in LSU started running the ball effectively.

Yeah I’m not sure that center is much of a concern anymore. We have addressed most of the OL with HS recruiting and we have depth now. I’ve always liked Martinez and Turner at center. I’m not so sure that it was our OL that was the issue when it comes to the running game, it looks like it’s more of a lack of explosiveness at the point of attack from our RBs.

I’m hoping that our freshman backs solve that issue for us and I also see Derrick Davis as a promising option there as well. With some work at that RB position in the off-season and gearing his body to play that position could make a huge difference for him playing RB.

Cain is a short yardage guy and I just don’t think Emory has that fight in him to be the RB he was supposed to be. I think he should just move on. Add Davis to that spot or go pick up a RB in the portal. We need an explosive starter who runs hard and has the home run ability. I think the freshman will bring that element but they’re freshman so will make those early mistakes at times you don’t want them to make it. You never know how early they can develop but you probably want someone solid there for next season. If Davis takes that move seriously and goes all in, I think he could be pretty damn good. Bring in another explosive back and we’d have those two with the freshman. All the others just haven’t showed much interest in being more than they are now. Which isn’t what LSU typically brings to game day.

With this new OL, it would be fitting to have a couple of explosive backs to compliment the other. We finally have an NFL caliber OL and now don’t have the RB to compliment it. It was the other way around forever. It won’t be that way for long, I know that for damn sure. Frank Wilson is going to fix that. I think he did a damn fine job with what we had this year. I look forward to our future run game and offense as a whole.

I noticed significant improvement as well when Martinez came in.

Hard to believe he will be a senior already next year.
