Stars are the most important. 5 star = talent

Why is everyone acting like our whole recruiting class is 2 and 3 stars. Our class currently has 16 4 stars and 8 3 stars.

Looking at the top 15 classes according to On3. Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee have 5 3 stars. Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas have 6 3 stars. Alabama and Texas A&M have 7 3 stars. LSU and Notre Dame have 8 3 stars. Florida State has 9 3 stars. Penn State 10 3 stars. Michigan 11 3 stars. Oklahoma 13 3 stars. Miami 14 3 stars.

This was a down year for Louisiana with top end talent. For 2025 we currently have the number 1 Wr, we will get the number 1 running back, and we are in serious contention for the number 1 overall player.

Exactly. You say "hey, this 3 star may be really good. Let's trust the coaches on this one" and you get flooded with "AKSHUALLY you can't win a national championship with 3-stars. How can we compete with Georgia with a bunch of 3 stars"

It's juvenile.

Washington is really not the program we should be comparing ourselves to or trying to mold ourselves after. Development of talent, talent evaluation, and character are all key components of recruiting. What we did last year with the DBs was actually impressive, this year has not been impressive. How the DB room looks moving forward will tell us how the Coaches are developing and evaluating the talent.

Stars are not the most important. Yes, you need four and five stars but you absolutely need the 3 stars as well. If all you look at is stars and you don't evaluate each player you won't win. For example: 2018 Terrance Marshall was the 5 star and Ja'Marr Chase was a 4 star. Chase was better. Badara Traore was the 4 star OL and Damien Lewis was the 3 star. Lewis was better.

2019 John Emery and Marcel Brooks 5 stars. Trey Palmer, Kardell Thomas, Maurice Hampton, Donte Starks, Ray Parker, and Devonta Lee all 4 stars.

2020 Eli Ricks, Arik Gilbert, and Kayshon Boutte were all 5 stars.

2021 Chris Hilton was ranked higher than BJT and Nabors.

The point is on an individual to individual basis you can't just take the higher ranked person. You can't take the 5 star over the 4 star, the 4 star over the 3 star, or say no, we don't take 3 stars at LSU simply because you are chasing star rankings.

When looking at the entire class it does matter in overall ranking. When getting pissed that we took a 3 star makes no sense because it comes down to the evaluation of that individual player.

The Star conversation is nuanced. Stars certainly matter. But it’s not all that matters.

Coach evaluations matter. Character and other intangibles matter. Academics matter.

One thing people never bring up in these conversations is the coaching staffs.

Yeah, these teams get 5 stars but they actually coach them up. Georgia has gotten multiple 3 stars into the NFL as first round picks.
Jordan Davis and Eric stokes just to name a couple.

Auburn showed the formula to win a championship without consistent top talent. They took a great QB, (Cam Newton) a great dlineman (Nick Fairly), A great offensive lineman (the Louisiana kid, forgot his name), and matched that with solid talent everywhere else, and they won a natty. Clemson did the same, albeit with about twice the top talent.

But to do this you have to have a great QB. To compete for championships, the way Bama and Georgia are competing this year without top QBs, you have to have elite talent at every position group. To the OP's point, they don't have to be rated as elite; they just have to BE elite.

Georgia and Bama experience yearly assistant coaching turnover. They STOCKPILE 4/5* players. So much so that there’s at least in kid that’s gonna hit. If you’re 5 deep, someone will be a superstar. Yes, you find diamonds in the rough, but UGA has become what they are because of Kirby’s recruiting. They’re so deep that they’re gonna win by default.

I agree, and I think one of the best things I can say about kelly has been his hit rate. From top to bottom both of his classes (really one full cycle) have been solid.
