Cooper was the best DB coach in America. This is a huge blow.

Larry Slade. He's Charlie Strong's DB coach at Louisville now. Per his UL bio, he was with Chief a long time, and before that with some of those good aTm defenses in the mid 1990's

i agree, and I wish him the best. Anxious to see who replaces him, would like to see the urban meyer approach, "you are useless on the staff if you cant recruit"

But Ill wait until the job is filled before I determine for myself how big of a deal this is. Just my two cents

I'm pretty sure he means that Cooper was leaving, not where he was going.

As far as replacements, I think Greg Jackson (former LSU S) is the DB's coach for the 49ers. He also coached at Wisconsin and Tulane.

I also noticed the Louisville guy was hired by Krags and kept on staff after Krags was fired.

Slade hire would suck balls. I'm sorry, that dude is way past his prime. And he definitely wouldn't be a upgrade in recruiting over Cooper...

What about the Db's coach at Tennessee now? He has ties to LOuisiana and LSU. Terry is his name I think?

Huge loss, I would have put Cooper, Wilson, and Chavis as the assistants I would least want to lose.

As to the comment earlier about a player not committing to a coach... well players are recruited on a lot of different criteria, and typically it is a combination of different things that they are being sold. One of those things can absolutely be the quality of a position coach... if the kid believes (as I do) that Cooper is one of the best defensive back coaches in all of college football then there is a good chance he would want to be coached by the man.

Of course he wanted to be coached by Cooper. What DB wouldn't? But given that the average tenure of a position coach at any one stop is like 2.5 years, it's still dumb to commit to the position coach rather than the overall program.

Has Raymond even proven enough at Nebraska though? I mean, he has only been there a year or two. I'm not familiar with his recruiting ability. If he can recruit, then I wouldn't mind him.
He got two DB drated out of Utah State in his two years there. Nebraska had really solid pass defense last year despite losing 3 starters to the NFL, and he will have another early round pick this year in Dennard, though not sure not much credit he gets for that. Not saying he's as qualified as Cooper, but very very few are.

we won't get anyone who is as good a coach as cooper. but, we will almost certainly get a better recruiter. cooper may be a good talent evaluator but all his recruits came from la. and I am not sure that wilson didn't find guys like raymond and the special teams guy got thompson.

The bad thing is that Cooper being the #1 DB coach in America, whoever LSU hires....no one will be satisfied considering the step back LSU is taking at the DB position.

If it's a good coach and a big time recruiter, I think most will satisfied. We all know some crybaby fans will never be fully satisified.

While yes we probably won't find a better coach (unless a surprise hire is made that no one is considering), I think the combination of a good recruiter and coach will suit most just fine.

Brazil wanted to play for Cooper because he saw the success his secondaries had. When you have as great a defense as we have had recently, whoever steps in will be right up there with Cooper

I'm sure Lance Guidry can grill. And, we would regain our footing onto the Welsh/Lake Chuck recruiting corridor.
