Watch their senior films and you make that decision. Spears after one year of football is already on another level than our "projects"

I have. Nothing on Spears video really stands out. Our coaching staff may see something that just doesn't pop out on video. They guy has decent size, good hands but has little speed. I'm thinking project is probably a good term but some projects work out very well.

Duckie, I'm not a recruiting expert, nor have I ever claimed to be. I DID watch his film....seems like a good athelete. I'll leave any further evaluation up to the three major recruiting sites and our coaches.

Fair enough. If you think he's a good athlete or prospect, what exactly are you upset about the offer for?

Thanks for the post, basically what I thought when I watched his video.

Whoa, I'm the only one sitting here willing to discuss this with you. You've taken everything I've said and turned it negative. I'm just discussing. Nothing wrong with that. I'm being civil and trying to hear you out.

If you can't see that, I'm out. Otherwise, I'll be happy to discuss.

Maybe you're looking for the wrong things. What stood out most to me were his hands and his willingness to use his height and leaping ability to create separation and to go up and get the ball at its highest point. He's not going blow you away with his speed but he has deceptive speed that allows him to get open. He also has decent route running ability. The kid's a steal. If you can't see that then I don't know what to tell you.

Per my previous post, that to me is precisely how I perceived Armand Williams and hence asked if KS may be a similar type "project"

However, that turned into all of the f'ed up comments above about me being negative and doubting his offer etc.....

Thanks for posting something of value and keeping it clean!!!!

LSU had a player named Eric Martin who later played years with the Saints who lacked great speed. There are players in the NFL right now who lack great speed but are great receivers. There are players in small colleges all over the country who make the pros and were rated low. This kids film is impressive. Period! And they can help him learn how to increase his speed. Great hands and tough! That is what I see. But, it does tell us that the coaches already know that some of their bigger targets are not coming.

I also noticed he is always looking to block someone when he doesnt get the ball. And also once he catches it in traffic he looks to go straight upfield and isnt scared of contact. Looks pretty good to me.

Dwayne Bowe is slow as hell, too.

I think he caught like 17 or 18 TDs this season.

247 stats had him at 11 TD for 2012. I'm not hung up on stats, just curious if they had it wrong.

Don't see how you can define anyone who has played only one year of football anything but a project. I'm thinking his upside is nice though. Probably a high football IQ, good hands and will be a guy you will see on third down in a couple of years.

Damn you must be some kind of genius to accurately know what kind of speed he has from just watching film on him.

His ability to go after the ball is elite, he doesn't wait for it to get to him, he grabs it before the defender can react. Better ball skills than RSJ. Also one of the hardest things to coach, while for Spears it's an instinct.

Based on his film, he looks like the best receiver in the state this year. This has been a pretty down year nationally for receivers and I just don't think the coaches could pass on a guy like Spears with our needs at the position. Even if the speed and strength aren't quite there yet, his ball skills, leaping ability and body control could make him an asset in the red zone from day one. ULL, La Tech and ULM all appeared to have one or more receivers that were equal or better big play threats than ODB, Jarvis and Boone, imo. Those guys were solid, but the explosive plays just weren't there. Our staff is determined to change that next season which is a great sign.

They went 3 games into the playoffs and the team scored 40+ in the first two rounds. The 11 might be regular season.

He runs a legit 4.5 according to his high school coach (former LSU Tiger, Barry Wilson), which is plenty fast. LINK

His game reminds me of Marques Colston, who runs a 4.55. He is not quite as tall though. He also needs to get in the weight room.

DO you just piss on everyone who has a differing opinion than you? There isn't a bit of film anywhere that would show him to have elite speed. It's average. Prove me wrong.

He has good ball skills which has been mentioned numerous times. Appears to have a high football IQ. He will be a project, but has a decent upside.

All of that has been listed, you just ignored it so you could piss and moan. No one is saying he is a bad player, or will be a bust. He is still a bit raw, doesn't have elite speed and will take a bit of time to find his niche.

Yeah, No! If his speed increases it'll be nature, not the coaches, that does it.

Check this out, though. This says 4.5. If true, his speed is good already.

From that article:
quote:

" I feel I will grow two more inches and feel I will grow as a player as well. I had a very good time this past season at Holy Cross. I worked hard to become a good player. Nothing is given to you. I will work hard to get better in college."

If he grew another 2 inches he'd be a Justin Hunter clone

Supposedly his senior year was his first year playing organized football. So no one really had a chance to pick up on him.

LSU missed out on a great Cornerback by the name of Tracy Porter because of this. Glad to see them go after this guy. Maybe they think he will explode.
