I know that nearly everyone knows the rule, but for that tiny minority that doesn't:

A player can withdraw their name from the transfer portal and return to their original school, provided the coach and program are willing to take them back and still have a roster spot available. The decision rests entirely with the original team's coaching staff and administration.

Key Considerations

No Obligation: Once a player enters the portal, their current school is no longer obligated to honor their scholarship or guarantee their roster spot for the following semester or year.

Coach's Discretion: The ability to return is ultimately the coach's decision. Some coaches may welcome a player back if they were in good standing, while others have a policy against allowing players who enter the portal to return.

No Guarantees: Entering the portal is effectively a one-way street in terms of guaranteed position and scholarship, so players and their families are often advised to have a conversation with their coach before making a final decision.

Accordingly, players can publicize their willingness to transfer and test their market value with other schools by entering the transfer portal and still return to their original school if the original school permits it.

Could be wrong but I don’t think Blake Baker is a fan of portal guys returning. Not sure on Kiffin

You also can have up to 105 scholarship players moving forward, which I don’t expect most schools to touch, but it does make a school like LSU more capable of saving a spot for a good player testing the portal.

Also of note, Sal, is that players can announce their intention to enter the portal or even enter their name in the portal once it's open, and still play in their current team's bowl game if they want to, and the head coach allows them.

Right. There really isn’t a “returning” involved in the process. Entering the portal doesn’t separate the player from the team.

And they can probably say they are entering now, but pull their name at last minute and not enter, right?

Correct. A player who enters the portal is still a part of the team if the coach allows the player to participate.

As usual, you eloquently state the most salient point, a point missing from my post.

You complete me.

But it does separate the team from the player. Once they enter, the team no longer has an obligation to them.

Blake is definitely not a fan of that and pretty sure Kiffin isn't either but situation may be different when he is just coming into the program...idk

The team no longer has an obligation to the player, but that does not separate the player from the team. The team then makes the decision of whether they want to separate or not.

Need get rid of this. Testing the market is BS. If your think you're worth more somewhere else, put your neck on the line. There are no repercussions
