most probably before Thompson commitment

Cushenberry was horrible until his senior yr. Damone Clark was horrible til his last year. Brandon Taylor was very bad his first year as a starter. Guys get stronger, improve, and game slows down. Chester at guard, and mubenga another yr in weight room, dont give up on tigers.
Amen to this.
Coaches's livelihoods are on the line so they cannot assume development.
But development happens and as fans we should not assume that current players cannot improve.

A Campbell/Jones type had never happened before in LSU history or anywhere else. You never have 2 starting tackles as freshman who become as good as they were. If you're lucky, every decade you get 1 good enough to start as a freshman. They are not wide receivers or running backs. No matter how good they are in high school, they're usually simply not strong enough yet, not to mention understanding protections and blocking.

ETA: I mentioned it in response to another post earlier in the thread. The 15 practices for the bowl, which are primarily used as an evaluation period, allowed him to see which or how many guys aren't ready to contribute next year.

Im with you - this seems to raise more questions than it answers.
The only question concerns numbers.
LSU is thin.
Adding anyone (hopefully a stud OT that is a known starter) would be wise.

I thought another Campbell/ Jones type would emerge with one of the Freshmen.
Someone else posted and I agree.
These two were expected to be studs - maybe not so early, but they delivered.
That’s an oddity. Most takes at least a couple of years to round into SEC starting material.

He said we're taking a specific number of guys. We're at that number and now says we're not done taking OL guys. The only thing that has happened in the interim between those statements is additional practice and eval time.

This is old news i thought. What kind of insider info is this?

If he's making that comment after 15 bowl practices, they don't feel good about the development of some of the young guys on the roster.
How do u figure? He just wants an experienced ol blocking for our biggest investment in nuss. Without nuss it doesnt matter what else happens. We dont have time THIS SEASON, if we want to seriously compete for a title, to wait and see how these guys perform at crucial positions and positions of need in big time cfb games with so much on the line (literally and figuratively). You can still develop other players for their time while having a player whos been there and done that already, whom you can feel confident in what your going to get every game. Thats the point.

Recruiting O-line talent is important but it means nothing if you have few to no skill-position playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. We found that out the hard way this past season.

Sounds like we missed on the last couples of years O-line hauls.
You gathered all that from BK wanting to take another OL with more experience in the portal?

Yet our run game was absolutely abhorrent this past season. Having an elite group of offensive linemen means nothing if you don’t have an offensive backfield of skills-position players that can match them in talent and effort. Kelly never understood that and it screwed us this past season. He made the boneheaded mistake of thinking that overcompensating and recruiting extra-hard at the OL position would cover up for our significant deficiencies at RB and WR. This year’s team was a direct reflection of what his Notre Dame teams were like and how he recruited there. It’s why his offenses at Notre Dame barely scored points against defenses that matched in talent.

Exactly but don’t worry people will come in here and be bitches and it’s all doom and gloom.

Nah. It’s more dumb to assume that a single comment means the head coach thinks his current team is not cutting it. All after 15 practices.
Posted on 12/30/24 at 8:08 pm to 304tiger
Sorry but Mubenga should never play again, if LSU is serious about winning any titles.
