NIL reporting

I just watched the clip of Maason Smith talking about how NIL has really help him and also his family. My question is since it's all legal to pay players, are they required to disclose the money they receive to the NCAA? Also, is there a website that reports the amount of NIL deals?
Just curious because players are talking about how NIL has really changed the lives of their entire family so they must be talking about a pretty large sum of money.

So I take it that the parents are signing these NIL deals since most college freshmen are not legal adults yet.
I know in Alabama you have to be 19 to be an adult. What's the age in Louisiana?

Legal adult? 18 is the age but you still have to report income even if you are not “legal adult.”

Depends on what part of the state you are in to be classified an adult at a certain age. I'm still a minor 12 or so Saturdays in the fall.

How old do you have to be to date your uncle there?

I know this has nothing to do with Smith, but just watched the Manziel documentary. I couldn't imagine the amount of bank he would've made late in 2012.

most start college at 18 so should be more than fine in LA

What's interesting about Manziel is that he came from money, unlike the 80 percent of the other players that came from poverty. It would have been interesting how much he might have made with NIL, but I'm sure A&M didn't get him for free!

I dont think this is the case at all. From the perspective of someone growing up middle class, sure, it would take a fairly significant amount to truly "change the lives" of them and their family. But if we're talking about a family that doesn't have a lot, then even a little bit can make a huge difference.
None of that is to say that he's *not* getting a significant amount. But i dont think anything he said requires that to be true. Like, think about the difference between being able to afford a car. Think about the difference of being able to get the car fixed if/when it craps out. Think about being able to take off work and afford air fare to go see him play away games. Think about the difference of not having to send a college kid any spending money when you don't even have it yourself. It legitimately doesn't take much to take care of all the stuff i just listed--to take a family from having absolutely zero possible way of being able to afford those things while still putting food on the table, all the way to being able to afford them without stress--and that IS legitimately life-changing.
I'll never understand why so many people are so upset that these kids are finally getting the chance to benefit from their own ability and hard work. Lotta people would rather see random TV execs and university brass rake in that cash instead of the kids who are actually pumping out the value. Smh.

Watch the documentary and you will find out that him coming from money was fabricated. His family wasn’t poor but wasn’t wealthy either.

If I’m not mistaken, I believe one of Smith’s parents is a Doctor. If the part about it being life changing for his whole family was probably a little for show. I doubt his family is changing their lifestyle based off his NIL.

I wholeheartedly believe players should be paid because schools have raked in millions and millions of dollars on the back of the players. I would love to know just how much players are getting paid because several have commented how it has really benefited their entire families.

I think all SEC schools have a ‘base salary’ NIL package…then special ones for the 4-5 stars or position groups. $30-50k/yr likely as a base.

So, exactly who pays this and is there some kind of agreement the players sign? I have no idea and am just trying to understand how all this NIL stuff works.

IDK just yet. Lots of trust initially, since offers are verbal until you can officially sign in December of your senior year. All of the schools have media room where players record bits for NIL deals, but for the elite players I’m sure those deals are setup prior to arriving. The collectives can make one time payments to get players…but that would be one off decisions for them.

Gaston, appreciate the response, I'm just trying to wrap my head around how all this works.

We are too. Have a Jr that plays…so we are learning as we go. SEC football programs are very complex machines, fascinating really.

Yeah, it is fascinating and good luck with your son, if I was him, I'd go visit as many campuses as I could.
