Nebraska Pipeline to La.

Was watching the 1997 Nebraska-Mizzou game on ESPNU tonight and it reminded me how Nebraska used to have a pipeline into Louisiana. It seems like every year they had at least one starter from Shaw! How was Osborne able to get this open, and how did Dinardo and Saban finally close it off? Seems like LSU’s rise over the past 25 years has exactly mirrored Nebraska’s decline.

Nebraska was a powerhouse back in the day under Osborne running the option. Tommie Frazier and Eric Crouch would bully people behind their mammoth oline and stable of backs. They had a nasty defense too. Big physical guys that would just beat your arse for 60 mins. I remember that title game where they completely ripped florida to pieces. It was their prime days in the 80’s and 90’s. No surprise kids anywhere wanted to go there.
They weren’t the giant shite burger they are now.
It wasn’t until Dinardo sold Kevin Faulk on LSU that the tide began to turn on in state talent coming to LSU. Saban reinforced it because he knew what LA had. Putting a fence up and continuing that is and always will be paramount

The rules changed to limit scholarships. Nebraska would put lineman on steroids and redshirt them, and work them out until they were beasts. They would recruit nationally, and were successful on skill positions in La and the north east.
Success bred success to want to play for NC and go to the pros. That and Osborne’s stature were attractive to recruits.
Nebraska does not have enough recruits, so their national image was vital to sustain their place. Once it slipped, they were toast.

Yep, remember Dave Remington. I thing he was the no. 1 draft pick as a center. Was out of the league shortly because the NFL checks for roids. Also, Osborne had no discipline for players. I remember I talked to a kid who was a walk on at Nebraska. He basically said and gave stories that the players were animals off their leashes.

Bo Pelini recruited him for Nebraska
Bradley Rice took this picture of us in Shrewsbury when he was 8 years old

Hope Bo can tap a few from Nebraska as payback.

It wasn't like Nebraska had some exclusive thing. Colorado, FSU, Notre Dame, Michigan etc all took players especially from NOLA when they were good and LSU sucked.

I was a Colorado season ticket holder in the 90s . CU vs Nebraska was basically the Louisiana invitational. One year CU had 6 starters from the Nola Area schools. They’d play Nebraska and there would be 10-12 starters from the 44 from Louisiana.

" County scholarships"
Around the time that Big 8 and SWC remnants were forming the Big 12, Texas and Coach Brown fought the NCAA to outlaw Nebraska's use of county scholarships, which were scholastic scholarships given to a recipient from each county in Nebraska.
Virtually all of the county scholarships were used on football walk-ons.. typically linemen, not skill positions..

another player that left NOLA. I watched him play 4 yrs at Aug and he was electric
@ NEB he played OFF, DEF & ST
Still holds the NEB all-time record for yds per KO return average - 29+ ypr
(may not be broken with todays rules)

I just checked Nebraska on 247 and only found 4 guys. 2 4* and 2 3* players. I doubt LSU would care to spend much time recruiting Nebraska when Fla (54 4*), Texas (51 4*), CA (30 4*), and Ga (30 4*) offer so many more targets.

Christian Lacoture was the top player in Nebraska and LSU got him.
