It works both ways. The schools also won’t be as loyal to the guys who don’t see the field. Tons of guys will try and transfer and no one wants them………including their original school. It’s a cluster F for everyone except the top athletes that can get a bag.

On April 23, 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a rule that will ban non-compete clauses between employers and workers, with limited exceptions. The rule will take effect 120 days after it is published in the Federal Register, which was on May 7, 2024. The rule will make it illegal for employers to agree to, enforce, or attempt to enforce non-compete clauses with employees or independent contractors, and will require employers to stop enforcing most existing non-compete agreements.

Sorry, my friend.

Jacoby Matthews can come now. If the NCAA drops this rule, how would the SEC imposing a rule have anything to stand on?

Can we start making athletes sign contracts? Just like us regular joes

Nothing says you can’t. Good luck getting any of them to agree to it and I don’t blame them.

Name one professional sport in which players can up and leave whenever they want, hint there isn’t one.

Because the players union and teams agree to those terms.

But there are actually plenty of pro sports a player can leave whenever they want. Just not the big 3 of baseball, basketball and football.

It's up to the fans/public/alumni to shut it down. As long as you watch there won't be any penalties.

So capitalism?

A football coach can just quit his job and go work for another team with no penalty?

They do it all the time. They just have to BUY OUT the rest of their contract (which their new team generally pays for) so yeah, basically no penalty.

Can't help thinking LSU might have sneaked into the NCAA basketball tournament if Jalen Cook had been eligible from the start of the season which would now be the case, I know things deteriorated with him the last couple weeks, but if he had been in the lineup earlier they would have likely won more games. This would have also given the opportunity for him to have more time with other players prior to SEC play and perhaps they would have meshed better and the season could have ended better for him and the team. Another 4 wins including one or two SEC wins would have allowed them to get strong consideration for the big dance.

I say if you can leave at any time with no repercussions the school should be able to pull your scholarship if you are not worth a shite and kick you to the curb.

Why you mad? I’m just explaining things to you like I would any other person who doesn’t understand something . I’m not advocating for it. When someone gives you facts and it makes you upset, that’s a “ you “ problem.

They’ve got to figure out one year contracts at some point

In the new revenue sharing model they are discussing having them sign multi year contracts with buyout clauses

Also discussing making schools pay transfer fees that will help revenue of smaller schools

In 2 years most of what yall complain about constantly will be way better

I'll admit it has been MANY years since I took the CPA exam and studied hard on the business law part of it, but I seem to remember something about "personal services" contracts, which at the time, used professional athletes, singer/songwriters, artists, etc. as examples of professionals who contracted their specific skill sets in exchange for compensation and must provide good-faith effort to perform to the contract terms.

So it's a bit different than the non-compete your local bank has the newly hired loan officer sign upon employment or in order to get severance after an acquisition.

Pretty sure these NIL deals are signed contracts.

Your “labor” argument doesn’t make any sense.
