This is why I'm not a scout. He has decent size, good long speed and lateral agility. Watching film he cuts and hits holes without deceleration and reaches top end quickly. Looks like his vision is good and as you said, he plays top competition.
All that and he's a 3 star with a modest offer list that doesn't include LSU.
This is why I will never claim to have some great knowledge on a HS prospect. He looks like a definite take, but apparently I'm wrong.

This is why I never worry about RBs and WRs. Louisiana produces so many.

Yeah. Every highlight of Sheppard I see he is hitting the hole very aggressively without any hesitation, and he outruns people pretty easily.
I know nothing about evaluating players, which is why I asked the question. I figured others knew more than myself.
What I do know is that Star designations are flawed, and I don’t trust them.
From just a game performance standpoint, Berry looks much more athletic and flashy.
However, Sheppard looks more like the more prototypical RB with great vision. Although it’s early, he reminds me of Caden Durham. I don’t think he’s as fast a CD, but the way he sees and hits the whole reminds me of him.

It's a solid list, and a lot of effort went into making it. I'm a huge fan of the RB position too. This group has been a lot of fun to follow, and hopefully they stay healthy to make huge impacts in college.

You can't base it solely off of that. If so, we wouldn't know who Jerry Rice is. Dude literally grew up in Starkville, and had to go to MS Valley. Best receiver of all time, from a college that was 1AA and wasn't even close to being a powerhouse.
Sheppard may be great, I don't know. I'm not a coach or scout and I've never seen either of them play. It seems to be a consensus that Berry is really good, by people that know a hell of a lot more than me.

He honestly should be the 3rd back in this class if we take another. Kid has it.

Salmen, Madison Prep, Carver, and Slidell in no world should be considered “top competition”… Berry would wreck those teams too. Nonselect I is Ruston and Neville and then everyone else… No St Tammany team has really been a contender in a long time
I trust our talent evaluators that have made LSU the second best program of the 2000s…

Wasn’t Mandeville in the state semis last year?

They were, but since the LHSAA split the playoffs, making a run to the semis is not like it used to be. Mandeville beat Sam Houston, St Amant, and outscored airline in a shootout to get there. None of those teams are what I would call football powerhouses. The path is much easier now.

Problem with that is the dude a couple years ago that was an average Newman QB looks like he’s actually going to be a 1st round pick at Texas.
You would absolutely rather see someone put up stats than not, but there are still other factors. The level of competition just makes it harder to evaluate.

That alone doesn’t make you a contender… they got to Ruston and were out of their league

Most impressive part of those highlights to me is his patience in allowing blocks to happen, then the burst.
Army, you have to take some of these opinions with a pile of salt. EX: Lester, who put way more time into this than I ever will, has his heels dug in that Berry is a WR at the next level. He very well may be right. However, he said in his thread it is a size thing. If you look at his (very impressive) spreadsheet, there is only an 8 lb difference between Berry and Simon.
I for one love the time and effort that most bring to this Recruiting Board, but this is also one of the many oddities of TD.

He looks really good. No offer?

Berry ran a 4.37 at a 247 event right after his sophomore year. That’s NFL speed when you have 2 years still left in high school. That kind of ceiling is going to make you an elite prospect, regardless of the level you play at.

Well Mandeville is your St Tammany contender this year.
Competition obviously doesn’t matter to scouts because Berry plays in the least competitive district in Louisiana.
With that said, I believe competition does matter. Going from 1A football in Metairie to SEC football is a gargantuan leap.
At least Mandeville plays in front of large crowds each week, and plays against better competition. Hell, although they lost, Mandeville played against Ruston and Ahmad Breaux in the semifinals last year.
