2Things that are true:
Top 6 class is incredible in the first full year of recruiting for not just an entirely new staff but an overhauled football department
Our current depth at DB is abysmal and we will get torched all year without 3-4 starting quality portal guys at the position
We have time to find those portal guys
Our NIL packages aren’t the best in the country
Our NIL packages are pretty damn good
Kelly seems to prioritize character more so than other coaches. I will take this perspective in the long run. Desmond rocks does you little good if he comes this year then transfers next year for a bigger bag
This class solidified some really important positions (OT, WR, Edged)
It seems like we missed on a few guys at positions of need
This staff seems smart enough to make adjustments that will improve our recruiting capabilities

To have yearly top 3 classes like Alabama and UGA do, one of two things needs to happen:
1. Louisiana needs to have an elite year; or
2. LSU boosters need to be as committed as Alabama or UGA boosters.
It's a tough decision because that's your competition and recruiting is directly correlated with their success. UGA had top 5-10 classes under Richt, and they were a consistent 9-10 win teams. Now they have top 3 classes every year because their boosters became more committed, and they won a national title/are a consistent playoff participant.
On the other end, LSU has won multiple titles with classes ranging from 3-7, and we are currently in that range. We won't be top 3 every year like Alabama and UGA unless one of the conditions listed is met - but I am sure the staff/boosters in our recruiting structure question whether it is worth it.

Well, we already grabbed 3 DL from the portal.
And you're never going to find 3 or 4 starters at DL in the portal.

on 12/22/22 at 11:47 am to hall59tigerI think before the free agent transfer portal was established, it would be a real blow to lose someone like Ricks at the 11th hour due to not having a backup plan of equal or a little lower value.
In this day and age, we can lose out on Ricks and still pair Harris with Toviano.
Kelly will balance the roster out in the portal. We are in good hands.

We didn’t lose Ricks over NIL. We lost him because Bama paid him a stupid amount up front in a lump sum.

You say this as though there are tons of elite players in the portal.
There aren't many. And the ones out there are highly sought after.

I'm sorry, but we have to start playing the game if we want to consistently compete for playoff spots. That means we're going to have to start ensuring that we don't lose out on guys we are considering must haves. Like Desmond Ricks.

In all seriousness, everything you said absolutely correct. Losing Ricks for a bag is a bummer but, we will be okay in the long run. The staff will learn from this cycle

Like Campbell, Howard and Perkins last year? It may be that the other 5 Top 100 players they took this year were the guys they considered must haves ahead of Ricks.

Does “character guys” equal “guys who sign with LSU”? You know who this board thought was a poor character guy? Harold Perkins. Right up until he took LSU’s money instead of A&M.
Can y’all stop with this nonsense. BK is recruiting the same kids every other top school is recruiting for the most part. Every kid who decides to play somewhere else isn’t a bad character.
I say again, just be happy for the players we got instead of feeling the need to trash any player that doesn’t choose LSU. It’s ridiculous.

I’m really not sure how you got from what I said to this take, but, okay. I’m not saying they didn’t want Ricks or that he isn’t a great player. I’m saying they got 5 other great “must have” players, but people just want fixate on the one who got away.
