Thunderbird, the issue here is you're locking into one side of the court. I'm going to throw some numbers out here, but Harper was an absolute defensive mess at Howard. His defensive bpr was -1.95, to put that in perspective that would have placed him with the 2,896th worst defensive bpr in the game, out of 2,983 rated players. That would have placed him in the 97th percentile of worst defenders in college basketball last season.
and again, that is at Howard. He would have been played off the floor at LSU.
Even with his offensive ability he was 2,415st in BPR because he was so poor defensively. Harper was dead last on the Howard roster in +/- last season.
To compare to other guys we added this offseason (and Howard's BPR was -1.19, #2415 in the country):
Dedan Thomas: +2.79, #563
Rashad King: +1.47, #1098
Michael Nwoko: +1.22, #1208
Marquel Sutton: +1.13, #1258
Max Mackinnon: +1.03, #1305
PJ Carter: +0.95, #1349
Pablo Tamba: -0.46, #2142
To put it into more perspective, Curtis Givens was -0.39 and #2108.
Harper was worth a look, and he was worth a roster spot if he was cheap. But LSU clearly (correctly) set a value on him and Creighton surpassed that value. LSU made the right decision.

Update on this overseas guy:
This is gonna be our last pick up. Hornsby is actually a pretty good comparison. Kinda like a Santiago Vescovi type. Great shooter and I think this one can do a little more with the ball in his hands. Should be done pretty soon.

If he’s anything like Vescovi that’s a good get

I love a good Eastern Block shooter. Illinois went heavy on former Yugoslavia guys and I love it

Alright, just talked to a couple sources at LSU about Harper and essentially they didnt see him as being that good. The MEAC is awful, Kenpom has it as the third worst conference in the country (29/31). For reference the Summit League (Marquel Sutton) was 17th and Northeastern (Rashad King) was 20th. Huge huge disparity between that and being a contributor on an SEC team this year i think.
This is laughable. The Summit League and the CAA are closer to the MEAC than to the SEC.
So, the money part of the quote is true for all 3 leagues.

In the end, it's up to the staff to evaluate these guys and make the call. It would have been cleaner to say that he didn't have the athleticism/speed to play in the SEC than to try to convolute the conference competition.
CMM camp usually doesn't leak stuff on players they don't sign, so this is pretty out of character for them, if true.

Gonna be in on a lot of these overseas guys from now on with Dupree and Patrick here. Dyson Daniels has a brother I expect us to be on in a few years. Australia is Patrick’s ground.

The entire Howard team was poor defensively, but looking at defensive number sim seeing, he was not the worst on their team defensively at all, a few others were definitely worse.
Its hard to judge someone's defense when an entire team is god awful at it, what we do know is as a freshmna this dude lit things up offensively and overall point of view too (assists, rebounds, etc). I can easily overlook some defensive stats on a craptastic defensive team when a guy is that good everywhere else. He had by far the best BPM of anyone who playeddecent minutes at Howard last season.
LSU didnt have a decision to make here IMO. We are out of NIL money to get guys of this caliber at this point and thats pretty clear to me with the excuses the staff was trying to make to Brune about not ultimately going hard after him or whatever due to the "Conference" he played in like we didnt take a number of guys from bad conferences already. We were sold a bill of goods about NIL that hasnt really come to much fruition beyond Dedan Thomas because just about everyone else in the class is a bit status quo with what we've gotten in the past if we're being honest.
We still dont have a comfortable starting 5 at this point and we all know this last transfer is going to be a pretty meh one. So we'll probably have to start both King and MacKinnon which isnt ideal because I doubt both of those guys are SEC starter quality. Again, I have severe doubts any of our transfers will be better than Harper next season outside of Thomas and MAYBE Sutton.

For Dedan Thomas we beat out Kentucky, Florida, and UCLA
For Rashad King we beat out Purdue and Butler
For Marquel Sutton we beat out K-state and Nebraska
We retained Jalen Reed, a guy who would’ve been a top 100 transfer valued around 1 mil.
We retained Robert Miller who a team in the big 10 offered a million dollars to leave us.
We poached away a starting SEC center in Nwoko from a tournament team.
Carter, Mackinnon, Tamba all decent pieces
We wouldn’t have been able to do half of this without an increase in NIL. We spent every penny of last years NIL worth on Dedan alone. Also I see guys in here talking about Creighton’s class like it’s some type of masterpiece. They’re headliners both came from one of the worst teams in the big 10 and everyone else are mid major guys exactly like we have. If that was Mcmahons class the same naysayers would be here.

Sham, I am all about overseas guys. Give me some dudes going to an entirely different country to prove themselves.
T-Bird, cmon man…you are being a little over the top about this kid. He played in the MEAC. Throughout this thread people talked about how horrible our defense projects but now we don’t care?
He very well could be awesome, but to crown this dude and shite on the others is completely ridiculous. Next year when he drops 15 a game for creighton you can come back and say told you so. I get the anger about NIL, but this is LSU and Woodward has punted the program.
The fact we are arguing about if a kid from the MEAC can come in and be a difference maker shows what the program has become. That is on our fricking AD. Sad

Preachhhhhh
Not many teams have 5 viable scoring options. LSU has 4 guys that can score 15 any given night, then another 5 role players that can contribute.
Are we a final four team? No. Are we a tourney team? Borderline. I know we all want more than that.
I think we are way better than last year at this moment. I think we are much more athletic and long. If anything, this is the perfect roster to see if McMahon deserves a chance. This is a borderline team and if we miss then he is gone if we make it he deserves more. Simple

Exactly. The plan was to give Mcmahon just enough to prove it with his coaching.
Another note: PJ and Tamba should be getting their rankings on 247 soon. Both will be portal three stars if I had to guess. PJ may be borderline 4. Mackinnon didn’t have a ranking before he committed here either

And yet, ON3 has this class ranked 58th with a -2. I have the current avg. BPR at 1.44 vs. last season's 1.86. Also, this roster is significantly worse defensively. UGA and Missouri also look worse than last season, but it's hard not to see this team not stuck in the bottom 1/3 of the conference next season.
With 10+ new players next season, CMM will have to do the best coaching job of his career to get this team into any postseason.

On3 is great but for basketball they are well behind. I honestly thought this was common knowledge. 247 is way more in depth and on top of things than on3 with bball portal.
This team is better than last year. I don’t need analytics and obscure stats to show that. You have mature players who have performed regardless of level. Those stats don’t take into account an injured Jalen Reed, a robert miller who grew up soooo much late. Then take the best player off 3 other teams and combine them…it is impossible to measure
I don’t expect us to be 3rd in the league, but depending on schedule we could be in that 8-12 range.

Exactly. This is a much more experienced mature team. That was a huge issue last season. And we have more scoring options. McMahon will either live or die with this roster but if Thomas proves to be the PG we’ve needed this team could make some noise. Especially if the league as a whole is down from last year. We will see soon enough.

How soon can we expect to sign the overseas kid?

A 21 year old freshman with professional experience who hovers around 40% from 3. Nice for the 13th get.
Posted on 5/3/25 at 11:43 am to mmcgrath
From what I’ve gathered this is a legitimate pickup. This isn’t someone coming from overseas that’s never played against good competition, he was playing against guys older than he was in the top league in Israel and having success
Posted on 5/3/25 at 11:44 am to tigersham
Nice addition. Has 3 yrs of international experience. I guess that is it with 13 scholarship players?

I was told thats it. Might add 2 walk ons
