I actually think the OLB/edge rushers O has been ok at getting, like Key, Chaisson, Ojulari etc.

I'd like to see him start to recruit better strong side Ends that are stout enough to hold up against the run and athletic enough to get disruption on passing downs. I know those guys don't grow on trees but are required in a good 4-3 defense

You're right. Since the Brockers, Montgomery et al group the DL recruiting was not great.

Brick was an all-timer at finishing 2nd for recruits. Never seen one better

Missed on Burch. All the Mississippi kids the year prior. Etc

He needs to land one of those impact 3-down Ends every class. I do think there's a chance Roy could be that

I think Roy projects as a 3T but it’s possible he plays SDE. But I do agree with you, we’ve got to land a guy like Burch. Ohio State gets one every year, but they have Larry Johnson.

I’ve been following recruiting since 99’ or so.

Maason Smith is the best DL I’ve seen come out of LA since then.

Will Campbell is the best tackle prospect I’ve seen come out since Whitworth
Dang, that's high praise.

I recall when Whit played TE for varsity as a freshman if memory serves be right. He was known then and that was about as high level of HS competition as there was anywhere.

All I know about Whit at that time was that he was tall, over 300 #, and had a waist. As a man with life long weight problems, I noticed that amongst OL, he was the only one with a V shaped body. Wide at the shoulders and narrow at the waist. I honestly did not know that linemen could be shaped like that.

He was, and remains, one of the most impressive athletes I have seen at LSU.

3. Marcus Spears

Marcus Spears was recruited as a TE and BB player. Saban convinced him to switch to defense once he got to LSU. A few basketball practices after a long football season convinced him to drop the BB.

Spears played both ways in HS & it was always assumed he’d move to defense

Yep you guys are just talking about the 21st century. Go google Fred Miller. He was not the only one of the best DL that ever played at LSU but one of the best to ever play intte NFL. But he also played OT.

LSU was playing UTX in the Cotton Bowl and had 4th and 2 1/2 at about the LSU 24. The wind was blowing 60 miles per hour in their face. Before the game punts weren’t going 15 yards from the punter. Most when they hit bounded backward. Charlie Mack called Fred over and said Fred get me 2 1/2. Fred went in against an AA DT. When the dust cleared and they measured they had a little over 2 1/2. Charlie Mack said that close. The rumor is Fred said you only said 2 1/2.

You had to see him play. He was a big man among big men. He had one of the great careers in the NFL.
