Yep. He is a very special talent. Smart kid too, has some Ivy league offers. I've heard from people close to him that LSU is very high on the list, but we will find out after he gets done with basketball, they're still in the playoffs.

Todd Kinchen played both briefly

Exactly… he would miss all fall BB practice, then miss spring football, if basketball makes the tournament
LSU football players doing two sports have had to return for spring ball. That is how Chad Jones lost his starting spot. Not sure what Jared Mitchel did.

Remember Charlie Ward at Florida State? It's rare but doable. Ward won the Heisman trophy as a QB, then he turned down the NFL to play in the NBA as a PG. He was exceptional in both at arguably the most difficult positions to learn in each sport.

Spears and Clayton tried it. Didn’t last.

So put him on scholarship with FB and if he can manage to help the MBB team then have at it. He only needs one damn scholarship anyway.

I think the bear Bryant rule forces a 2 sport player (with one being football), to be on the 85 man football limit. Could be wrong though.

This is correct. You can't be on scholarship in any other sport and walk on the football team. You have to be on football scholarship and walk on the other sport. This is why football demands priority of the athlete.
How much really depends on the coaches and players. Saban and maybe Miles required players to attend their first spring practice. Subsequent years would depend on player development, or maybe which sport may give the athlete a better chance at being a professional.
Spring practice is really about player development. It takes a really special player to forgo that development and still be as good or better than his competition.
