There is no one way to skin a cat.
Missouri had success this season with a lot of mid-major upperclassmen with a few JUCO players mixed in. K-State brought in transfers with major conference experience and added JUCO players. Last season Iowa St went more the major-conf. transfer route.
NONE of those rosters, on paper, looked better than LSU's roster this season. So before he does anything else, McMahon has to adapt his approach/plan to major conf. basketball. LSU's execution and approach on both sides of the ball was complete shite this past season. Sign whoever you want. If they take that same approach next season the results won't be much better...if better at all.
I stull FULLY believe there are some talented pieces on this roster. Far more talented than what the record/numbers showed. While the McMahon defenders disagree, this season's dismal performance was much more of a byproduct of coaching than a complete lack of talent. Still, LSU could use an infusion of talent...particularly in the backcourt.
(My) priority list:
1. PG who is a scoring threat. Hill has the athleticism to get into the seams and he's not a bad passer. But when defenders don't have to worry about you beating them from deep or from anywhere outside of maybe at the basket, you are easy to defend.
2. Rebounders! If you can't shoot, you need to be able to get second chance shots at the rim. LSU was an ok, but far from great offensive rebounding team. The defensive rebounding was much worse. When you already struggle defensively, you cannot give opponents 2nd and 3rd chances.
3. A stretch 4. I think the coaches thought Reed would be that guy this season. That's why he started on day 1. Unfortunately, you could tell Reed was very much a product of AAU basketball as he was woefully unpolished. Still, there is raw size and some degree of athleticism you simply can't coach. Keeping him would be great. Regardless, another big who could space the floor is always good to have. LSU tried to get a few "shooters" in the transfer portal last season and struck out. They can't afford to miss again this year.
4. More defenders. If nothing else, you had to be a bit encouraged by Phillips's presence in the SEC tournament. He's a building block as a rim presence. If you have one of those guys it allows you to be more aggressive on the perimeter. Everyone talks about poor LSU performed offensively this season (and they were) but doesn't realize they were even worse defensively. That MUST improve drastically or LSU has no shot whatsoever to compete.

Obviously he is worth having a conversation with, but this is an odd transfer. TCU is in the NCAA Tournament and he was averaging nearly 22 mpg. He left the team for "personal reasons" just before the Big 12 tournament and his mom accused TCU's coach of mistreatment.
LSU obviously needs help, but this sounds like a guy who had one big game in last years' tournament...didn't consistently replicate that success...eventually started playing less, got angry, and is now bailing on his team right before the biggest games of the season.
This is example 1,444,556 for the fans that think college players care as much about their team/school as you...they don't. Their only criteria in choosing where to attend school is how that program will benefit them individually. They don't care all that much about playing in the NCAA Tournament if their personal desires aren't being met.

Good post. The only interesting tidbit to add is that he was recruited and offered by Wade out of hs.

Think lampkin would be a good fit for LSU let him and Phillips rotate so they can stay fresh and have a good rebounder on the court most of the game.
Just hope it wouldn't deter Phillips if we brought in lampkin

All I know is the players that stay from last years squad need to adopt Joe Burrow esq. off season preparation for next year.
They need 10k free throws
They need 25k shots from the field
They need 25k opposed passes
Just think if you cut the turn overs in half, increase free throws by just 10% and increase shooting from the field to 73% we would be in the hunt for a spot in the dance.

Joe Burrow showed signs in 2018 and actually had talent.
90% of our basketball team did not show signs nor do not have the talent

What's more important is if McMahon adpots a Joe Brady-esque change in his overall approach. The talent was middle of the SEC last season. The coaching was worst in the league bad.
No different than the 2021 LSU football team. LSU had the second most players taken in the NFL draft following that season (only behind national champion Georgia). Yet, LSU was .500. It wasn't a talent issue. It was the moron in charge that held the team back. You saw the results IMMEDIATELY when the team was released from the shackles of the horrible approach dictated by the HC (see 2021 Alabama game).
LSU needs more talent. No one will dispute that. But they need a complete overhaul of what they are trying to do on the court more than they need additional talent. One, without the other, isn't going to work.

Texas Tech transfer Robert Jennings tells

Based on publicly available info, it looks like MM is really trying to land a couple of guys that can play the 3/4/5. Also, it sounds like BJ Mack might be Michigan bound.
However, with over 800 players now in the portal, I'm sure there is lots of contact being made that hasn't made it out via public sources.

The top players from big schools aren’t likely to transfer. They will have to look at the best players at smaller schools who want more exposure. Even then LSU will have to compete with other big schools for their signatures.
The difference is we’ll be trying to get them to play significant minutes. Other SEC teams need them for depth. We are screwed.

I would love it if we got into the Primo Spears sweepstakes. Looks like a cross between Waters and Pinson out of Georgetown.
