In one of the more poorly kept secrets, South Carolina is about to hire Schnall.

They're going to be a player in the high end of the portal.

They’re another one of those schools that has basically punted on football and will be throwing a lot of money into baseball and other sports. Just like Arkansas and Miss State

For whatever reason they stopped recruiting in state kids and then Wofford (mostly under Interdonato), Campbell (under their previous coach), and USC Upstate (currently) all became really good. And of course Coastal.

the competition for players this offseason will be insane when you look at what all the SEC teams are losing

the bidding wars will be intense

Sorry if it's been discussed, but is Clauss hurt? On the move to another summer league? Went 3/8 with a HR in 2 games in the Northwoods and hasn't played since.

I haven't looked, so I'm not sure. His dad has been tweeting about the summer stuff. There may be some info on his twitter.

Just checked and it looks like just stuff from the first two games. Nothing since, and no mention of his name on twitter since.

I said this on the rant, but I really assumed he'd be a day 1 portal entrant strictly because of how that OM game went. I'm assuming they have a plan in place with Jay, and had one from the jump, where this year was going to be a "redshirt" type season.

Really hope he sticks around.

I was also expecting him to enter. However, he has a clear path to playing time if he works at it. Both he and Ruckert mostly played SS their whole life so 2B was somewhat of an adjustment. I think they're both capable of playing any of the infield positions with enough work, and at least 1 or 2 of those positions are probably completely up for grabs. Mikey Ryan said no thank you to that proposition, even though I believe he is also capable of playing any of the infield positions.

Also, what position is he and Ruckert playing in summer ball? If I were them, I'd also be getting reps in the OF.

I keep thinking about how we cut Brady Kehlenbrink loose from our 2024 recruiting class and then signed Cooper Williams late in the process to add another lefty.

Kehlenbrink hasn't been outstanding for Mizzou, and was definitely put in a lot of bad spots as freshman before he was ready. But holy shite is he miles better than what we got from Cooper Williams.

Just in SEC games this season:

Williams - 6 IP, 10.50 ERA, -8.9% K-BB Rate
Kehlenbrink - 49 IP, 7.71 ERA (again not great), 19.1% K-BB Rate (very good)

Clauss played in just 2 games and made 2 errors in 3 chances at SS....

Not sure on Ruckert at the moment. Probably a better question for Project.

Williams did objectively help us out in a title season though, so I'll take the bad with the good.

They don't play their first game until Friday.

Of all the summer league locations to visit, Ruckert and Patrick are in possibly the best. Northern Sonoma County in an awesome little town. Several hundred wineries within a short drive.

Had a buddy play there - I believe.

Kind of surprised they sent Ruckert there and not NWDS or somewhere better. My friend spent two years at LSU, but I think the summer he played out there was while he was either in JUCO or at a lower level school.

A guy that's kind of flown under the radar is Mizzou freshman 2B Blaize Ward.

Hit better in SEC play than he did overall.

SEC only stats: .323/.411/.427 with 17% K rate

I want to dig more into his defense, but of all the possible infield guys, one with SEC experience could be a coup.

Williams had a 1.80 ERA in 21 appearances as a freshman. There is no lack of talent there. A slight majority of his innings were against the SEC and in the postseason.

I don't know the post season numbers off hand. He 4.1 of his 20 innings in SEC play as a freshman. I know he was used may more toward the end of the year, so he very easily could have had another 6+ innings in post season play.

And yes, he directly contributed in a championship season, which makes my thought exercise kind of dumb in general.

I just had been thinking about it and wanted to look it up because when we cut Kehlenbrink loose the reasoning was because he couldn't throw strikes well enough to pitch right away. Which wasn't necessarily wrong at the time, but it seems to have flipped by year two.

I’m just curious to see how he performs/develops this summer and fall. I can’t even really think of a comp Javen Coleman had bigger highs (performance against Oregon in ‘21 Regionals) but had similar command issues. But that still doesn’t seem like a good comparison. Clearly has talent just seems to have a mental block.

If South Carolina hires Coastal coach, LSU should go get Coastal pitching coach for staff
