I remember last year there was talk that the MLB was moving towards a guaranteed % of slot value for guys that participated in the MLB combine. It was thought this could help seniors that were good enough to be invited to the combine from being totally jammed. Do we know anything about this being implemented?

Also, I wonder if the new "5 in 5" rule could help guys coming back for a 4th year since they'd have another year to bargain with.

It's been in place for several years. But they only invite like 175 guys to the combine and it's never going to be the population of guys targeted for the severe underslot senior-sign deals.

But it's not like those guys are being taken advantage of. They agree to the bonus ahead of time and the alternative is not getting drafted at all. Not out of spite or anything, but because they're in a category of player that is largely viewed as fungible.

I thought it was more like 300+ guys invited. Agree with your points, just thinking it could help a guy like Milam if in the past his options would be go pro as a junior or be offered 20K as a senior.

Will be curious to see how the draft plays out. We return some key pieces but still need more. How likely is it that Weinstein makes it to campus? Strong left handed bat and athletic middle infielder seems like he would be leaning draft.

He will be a draft eligible sophomore.

And while he's listed as a middle infielder, he played 2B on his high school team in deference to a sophomore/2028 kid.

That pushes his "now" value down, but gives him a lot of opportunity to prove himself for 2 years in the SEC.

Isn't he at Orange Lutheran?

I'd have to assume that the sophomore starting at SS for Orange Lutheran is viewed as a day 1 guy out of HS.

I know it doesn't mean much, but his socials (and some of the other top 100ish guys) seems much more pro LSU than the draft as of late. Could just be the flavor of the week.

He is. He transferred in from Huntington Beach for his senior year.

they already indicated the 5/5 rule won't apply to the 25/26 rosters

going forward it would benefit those on the 27 roster for baseball
the players that would stay all five years in baseball are not the players you will be building your team around especially in baseball

I kinda agree but there would be guys from every team that you'd like to keep around. I think Jay would keep Cowan for 8 years if he could

That would be huge if he would make it to campus.

They haven't clarified anything other than the 5/5 rule will not apply to outgoing seniors currently on rosters who have exhausted their eligibility.

They have "Expressed support" for the following:
quote:

The board also expressed support for two key elements to be included in future changes:

1. Maintain the Division I core guarantees — including degree-completion funding for up to 10 years after a student-athlete's eligibility expires if they have not yet earned a degree.

2. Maintain existing rules — allowing four seasons of competition in five years of eligibility — for student-athletes competing in the 2025-26 academic year; new rules are not expected to retroactively apply to student-athletes whose eligibility is or will be completed by the spring of 2026.

It's not about building rosters around guys who will stay here for 5 years.

It's about guys having an extra year of draft leverage, and sometimes 2 extra years in the case of a DES like Curiel.

OF Jake Souders from Samford is a name to keep an eye on. No overt connections to him yet, but it looks like we're circling.

Curiel broke his ankle in the fall, open to an LSU return - Louisianasports.net
quote:

“I definitely don’t have all my eggs in one basket yet,” Curiel told Matt Moscona on After Further Review. “I’ve definitely talked to Coach (Jay) Johnson. I obviously want to be a Tiger. I told him, if there’s a coach I could play for forever, it would be him. It definitely sucks. I’ll be the youngest guy in the draft this year college-wise. I miss (the age cut off) by like a month. So, it’s definitely a tough decision to make.”
quote:

“People don’t know that I broke my ankle in November,” Curiel said. “I know that rumor was out there, but it was definitely true. I had three weeks to prepare for the season. It was my back foot, and it was kind of hard for me to load into my back leg. Obviously, I’m a leg lift guy.”
quote:

“Everyone on our team got injured at some point, and it was it was just very unfortunate,” Curiel said. “I hurt my ankle mid-November. I can’t say how I did it, but it was not a good reason. But that happened, and that’s why the season started how it did. I feel like I showed some toughness progressing through that and not giving up.”
quote:

“Coming back to LSU to compete for another national championship means the world to me,” Curiel said. “I’m excited for whatever lies ahead, and it’s all in God’s hand in my opinion. I’m open to whatever.”
Sounds unlikely but it's not nothing.

OF Jake Souders
Good numbers and great size. I'm just weary of the K/BB ratio of the lower level guys. 25/49 and 24/45. Could be worse.

Percentages are helpful more than raw numbers IMO. 17.7% K rate (down about 2 percentage points from his freshman year). Nearly 10% BB Rate.

You're right. Looks better that way at least.

Also (I know it's on the rant), Moore confirmed he's coming back. Hunt Article
quote:

That right arm injury occurred two weeks earlier when a sweaty weight bar slipped out of his hands during clean rep.

“Kind of just a freak deal,” Moore said. “I was in the weight room after my third start, and I got hit right in between my elbow and forearm. It kind of was a bone bruise. It felt fine when I would throw and then every start it just kind of lingered and lingered. The recovery to get back to 100 percent just wasn’t the same.”

Moore tried to work his way back but was shut down with a month to go in the season and had surgery.
quote:

I’m really excited to get back.”

Back, means to LSU. Moore is a junior and could turn professional. He’s made the decision to return to the college game. LSU has a plan to ease him in over the final months of 2026.

“I talked with Jay (Johnson) about it,” Moore said. “He said we’re going to take it super, super slow in the fall. I’m not going to throw in the intrasquad scrimmages. He said I’m not going to take a break over Christmas break. That’s the time where I’m going to really build up so out of the gates, I can go five or six innings.

“I feel great. I really thought it was going to be a lot more painful and a lot more recovery process, but the pain’s been very minimal, and I can move it around and stuff, so I’m headed on the right track.”

This guy tends to have sauce. Assuming he's referring to Milam/Brown.

I think LSU could put together a package for one of them if they really stretched themselves thin, but not multiple. Unless they just loved LSU, which luckily these 3 seem to do.

Still, not getting my hopes up. Just something to monitor.

All pipe dreams, but football and basketball boosters have come up with a lot of money for those rosters. You have to think this season would be the one to really shake up the baseball boosters, albeit maybe not as deep of pockets as those other programs and other variables go into the baseball draft.

I love the box, but you'd hope some of the people they built those god awful field box seats for would pony up some more cash

It was rumored that he hurt his ankle at the end of fall practice, so it does explain his slow start. It's not an excuse for missing the tournament, but I think we were more banged up this season than people realized.
