I'm listening to it now. Something I just heard that I think we were thinking differently about with the roster is that Bollman was not said to be a covid spot. Johnson named Dugas, Beloso, and Merrifield.
Unless the interview was done during that time that Bollman was not listed on the roster for whatever reason.
Given the rumors of Noot having TJ, him redshirting may have opened up an active roster spot for Bollman. Bollman got a medical redshirt for last year. I can't remember if he redshirted his first year in JUCO as well, but he pitched 3 JUCO years with one being a COVID waiver year. His last year of eligibility will be next year, so that would count as his COVID year. I think next year is ,the last COVID year except for maybe a few stragglers here and there.

Can't wait until all the covid roster spot confusion is gone. Can't keep up with it.
My count is 42 right now with 3 covid. With rumors of Noot, that makes him and Coleman medical redshirt if true. Would put the roster number at 37 needing to get to 35. Maybe other injuries we don't know about or just some players make take a redshirt.

I suspect that Applebey is another medical RS, but don't know for sure.
I would say the regular redshirt candidates would be Paul, Frey, and Primeaux but those are just wild arse guesses. Jay did namecheck Frey in the Cauble interview so maybe he's not lined up for a RS.

That is also the 3 players I would look toward. More to do with the depth of the positions they play than how good they are. Paul had a decent fall but they have so many OF options he may have to redshirt if they need someone to.

Frey is very versatile. I'm sure Jay will want him available if at all possible.
Probably looking at OF and P for true redshirts. OF is a logjam right now, considering you have at least 2 IFs that can also play out there. Pitching seems really deep, and more LH heavy than we've ever been.

Frey they used at 1B about 3x as much as catcher this fall looking at BayTiger's stats.
Jones is someone who split time pretty evenly at catcher and 1B this fall by comparison.
If I had to guess they see catcher as Milazzo/Neal/Travinski/Jones and Frey is probably going to 1B/OF ultimately.

Agree. Frey's versatility to play C/1B/RF makes it less worrisome if Jay gets sub happy in matchups RH v LH and vice versa - you can just stick Frey in if the list dwindles amidst trying to play games with the opposing pitching coach.

Lets talk 2024. LOL. I wonder if Nippolt returns for 2024. I really liked what I saw out of him in the fall. I think he has a good chance to start the majority of this season-- but obviously we are loaded so maybe he's one of the odd men out.
I'm completely disregarding any incoming freshmen from this discussion. I think we have 6 guys who look like locks to start in 2024: Tommy White, Josh Pearson, Paxton Kling, Brady Neal, Jared Jones, and Gavin Guidry. I also think the 3rd OF and the other 1B/DH guy will be very easy to fill between returners and newcomers. The other infielder spot seems a little more up in the air however.
We only have 6 2B/SS/3B guys right now and 3 of those will be gone (Dugas, Thompson, and Merrifield). If we assume White stays at 3rd and Guidry is penciled in at SS, we will have a big need at 2nd base. I do realize that we have some talented high school commitments and that the transfer portal is always an option for every position these days but I think Nippolt would be a great option if he returned for a 5th season-- especially considering he's probably not a guy who will get drafted high and his playing time might be less than he would like this year.
Thoughts?

I think Nippolt was taken with the understanding he'll be here more than one year. One of the things Jay talked about in an interview is adapting to the trend of teams getting older and that experience being a difference maker in the playoffs. (you can look directly at ND-Tenn to see how it can impact a series)
In the past, when there were more levels of the minors and more draft spots, guys with eligibility left were bouncing to the minors without much thought because they might have gotten recruited over or their opportunities would diminish as guys on their own team developed. That's not happening in the same way and those guys are either staying on their own team or hopping in the portal and it's making college baseball better, but more competitive.

Doing some research currently to find some mid year portal guys on JUCO rosters. Specifically looking for Ryan Ward from Arkansas that was committed to Jay at Arizona.
In the course of my research I found Grant Fontenot on the roster at McLennan in Waco. Big time JUCO program and good landing spot for him. They also have former commit Wyatt Wiatrek there in addition to current target Trey Cehajic from Shreveport.

Wonder if maybe Johnson and Fontenot agreed for him to go there and get some valuable innings and then come back for next season.
Would be an interesting strategy but would be a risk for Fontenot to agree to it.
Feel like it is possible. Fontenot probably could have went to another D1 and get some good innings.

That would make great sense to go to a good JUCO program get lots of innings (more than he would've gotten at LSU) and develop then come back for next year.

A name to keep in mind for the 2027 class is Ruston 8th grader Hunter Soto. He is the son of legendary Louisiana Tech slugger TJ Soto, Tech's all-time home run leader. Hunter is 6-2 and 210 pounds and plays 3B. He will play for Ruston High. Saw film of him taking cuts. Raw power as a right-handed hitter.

I'm sure in Fontenot's case is to get innings, something Jay couldn't guarantee
If he does well enough he will have plenty of suitors

Big pick up. I’ll add him tomorrow.

It is, but still seems weird taking commits from 8th graders
Still big to get the #1 player and one that looks to be on the path he is. Also means more when it’s not just some huge kid but one that is average size….just outworks everyone, has elite speed and elite bat speed

Griffin is just so damn fast.
His arm and EV are pretty in line with other top players. He hits a ton of home runs for a kid his size and his ball just carries, carries, carries. It has since he was 7.
But damn, his speed is like in the 99.9 percentile, you just dont see kids that can get it going like that. There is no routine play once he puts it in the field.

Huge pickup, he’s super advanced.
