Carter Young should fit in the Covid senior category since he was a freshman at Vandy in 2020, if he decides not to sign.

You have to be a covid senior (5th year), not a regular senior.

He's just a regular senior.

Wow. When its layed out, they are gonna have to cut a couple really good players. And most likely multiple pitchers.
Id assume edwards and hellmers would be odd men out.
Travinski could be too

Wondering if Noot is going to make it. Seems like he should but that would be another big guy to get to campus. He's one of the top RHP in the country. Not sure they'll push hard for Skenes after seeing how this draft played out.

Really need some more lefties, imo

Normally you can look at the roster and see guys whose performance has dilatated they can't cut it, or guys that haven't had the chance to perform but the ceilings aren't real high, and that kind of fat can be trimmed pretty easily.

We have a lot of high ceiling guys on that list right now. There may be a few guys here and there that have had performance issues and are kind of maxed out, but we're going to end up losing some guys we really like simply because the numbers won't work out.

That's how it used to be under recruiting coordinators prior to Cain. And it's something high level current teams deal with. Guys transferring out and contributing at their next stop, while still having a good roster here is not a bad thing. It means we're recruiting the right level of talent and should keep the depth high.

Tennessee had guys transfer out that went on to be conference players of the year or the first guy from the 2021 draft to reach the majors.

We've recently had guys transfer out that couldn't get on the field at Sunbelt and Southland schools.

Skeens is a proven player. They get a chance to get him they will no question.

It really is night & day from the roster decisions they had to make last year at the same time

Whoosh!

I see a few tweaks and I am usually pretty liberal with who I think should be a axed. And it ain’t much

Sorry, that was my fault. I didn't look at my spreadsheet and I got the 48 number from yesterday when I was looking at it before Gervase and Pineda. My fault. It should be 46 if you count Haddad and 45 if you don't count him.

Edwards has been looking good lately so wouldn’t count him out just yet.

Hellmers looks to be on the outside right now imo

I want to revisit the posts I made a while back to see how I did on draft expectations.

Here is what I said about the infielders:

quote:

I don't think we have a high chance of getting all 3 to campus. I would be ecstatic if we got two of the three. I would be pretty happy if we held on to one of the three, especially if it's Guidry or Romero because they could play short. That's not a knock on Toman, shortstops are just harder to find.

I don't think we meet our positional needs if we only get 1 or 2 of them though and I think we will hit the portal for another infielder.

I think I got this one right.

My draft thoughts on the catchers:

quote:

My conservative thought is that we get 1 of 3 to campus, with maybe a 15% chance of getting 2/3. Milazzo and Travinski both have eligibility remaining and enough questions that they will probably be back next year. Additionally, Blaise Priester is still in the program redshirting. There have been conflicting reports on how much he wants to stick around, but I'm counting him as part of next year's team until there is something concrete to say he isn't. All of that is to say that 1 of 3 would meet our positional needs and preclude us from having to find a JUCO or Portal guy. If anyone on the roster falls off, or we fare worse than expected in the draft, I would expect to go the portal route rather than the JUCO route.

I was way off on this one, in a good way.

I don’t think there will be many 88mph RHP on the 2023 team.

I might have missed this, but how is Skenes eligible to play next year considering it’s past the transfer deadline?

My draft thoughts on LHPs.

quote:

As I said, I can see anywhere from 4-6 out of 6 making it to campus. We needed a big boost to the LHP group on the roster. I don't think we're necessarily done recruiting this group for the class though. Carson Dorsey from Gulf Coast St CC in Florida is on our (and everyone else's) radar. I don't think we're after him because we don't like what we have already, but more because you can never have enough good pitching. I don't think we have to add to this position group in this class, but I don't think we will pass up a guy if we feels he can help. Even if we only get 4 guys, I think it puts us in a good spot, because that would mean we got two of Ackenhausen, Snelling, Kennedy, and Herring.

I think I got this one right too. (Dorsey got drafted yesterday, but I also don't think we pursued him much after this post)

Draft thoughts on OFs:

quote:

Overall, I'd say the biggest likelihood is that we get 3/4 to campus. The second most likely scenario is 2/4. With recent classes having the OF already stocked with young guys, I don't think we need to address this position further through the portal unless there is unexpected attrition. Whether we get 2 or 3 of these guys, I think we're done recruiting OF for 2022.

I was right on OFs, but that was really easy.

The deadline was just get your name in the portal Jul 1st, he did that.

You dont have to transfer by that date to be eligible for next season.

Draft thoughts on RHPs:

quote:

Of the JUCO RHPs, I could see us getting anywhere from 1 of them to all 3 of them.

quote:

I think we get 2 or 3 of the HS RHPs.
quote:

Even if we get 6 out of 7, I don't think we're done recruiting this position group for next year. You can never have enough good pitching. The type of HS guys that could be on the radar are late pop up types that may be currently committed to JUCOs. We are also still looking at JUCO RHPs and will certainly be looking in the portal as well. We kind of already are.

I was too conservative on the HS righties, but we did get 6/7 RHPs to campus (pending Noot I guess).

Only insight we really have on this is to believe what Naptime is telling us. He is saying it has been full court press for him and that we are still in the mix for sure. He did mention something that the next few days will be something to keep an eye on. Don't remember if that was regarding Skenes or maybe Noot and Young. Maybe all of them.
