Willis is a beast. One of the best HS/travelball arms and releases that Ive seen. Has some work to do with bat but power and speed are legit. He aint making it to LSU.

Your thoughts on Riggs Threadgill? My dad and brother live in Fredericksburg although they don't really follow high school baseball players. Is he a draft risk, will he be a starter or reliever?

Thanks

For whatever reason, there is just never a ton of info coming out of Texas on recruits. I wonder if it's just that the state is so big and the amount of players so many that guys just don't get covered by the recruiting services.

But I know he did the MLB PDP stuff last year. So he's been seen by pro scouts. I don't know enough about him to really speculate on whether he's a draft risk. As the draft gets closer and the prospect lists grow, I'll be looking for his name. He looks like he's having a good season on the mound and at the plate.

Without knowing more about him, I would assume a bullpen piece. But it was similarly hard to find scouting info on Walker a few years ago and Fontenot last year.

Kiley McDaniel of FanGraphs filed a prep scouting report today that mentioned Brice Turang and Cole Henry. Turang's gone, first round, so I won't paste that report. Here's what he said about Henry:

quote:

Cole Henry, RHP, Florence HS (AL), LSU Commit

Henry got on the scouting radar years ago, getting into the low-90s as an underclassman, and has steadily improved. He has a solid frame with some projection and came out showing a solid three-pitch mix early on: a 91-93 mph sinker that had plus life at times, a solid-average changeup, and a curveball that flashed above average. The arm action and delivery both look reliever-ish, though that isn’t the clear negative it used to be given how relievers are valued these days, and it isn’t a slam-dunk projection. Henry is in the area where his price will dictate whether he turns pro or heads to LSU, but there’s third- to fifth-round talent here.

I saw on twitter that Brock Mathis has signed his LOI with LSU. He's the freshman catcher at Northwest Florida State. He's one of two JUCO freshman catchers we have committed. He hasn't been playing a ton due to injuries.

I'm still trying to find his summer ball destination.

Project I admittedly don't know much about college baseball recruiting, when a guy signs with that school that means it's set in stone that he's attending that school, unless he goes pro?

If a kid signs an LOI, it's only kind of set in stone that they will attend that school. Going pro is a big reason why they wouldn't. But also going the JUCO route as well. The LOI is an NCAA document. JUCOs have their own similar one for NJCAA or the two organizations out west.

A player can sign an NCAA and an NJCAA LOI at the same time and it wouldn't mess up their eligibility for either organization.

Guys also get released from the LOIs, but that's not as frequent. Typically if there is a question over scholarship dollars remaining or having an actual spot in the class, that is ironed out before the LOI is signed.

Keith Law on Turang from his top 50 for the draft prospects.

quote:

27. Brice Turang, SS, Santiago High School, Corona, California. A plus defender at shortstop with great hands, range and arm strength, Turang hasn't shown much offensive ability, with power in batting practice that never translates to games. Turang is committed to LSU, and if he's not drafted before this point, he might very well end up geauxing to school.

It seems like Turang is big on attending LSU, but like Enlow last year, it just takes the right team that likes him and has extra money to take him away.

If Turang ends up even slipping to the 2nd round that would be great news...not out of the woods but great news.

Saul Garza signed his LOI a couple weeks ago. According to this article he seems pretty locked in on being at LSU. LINK He was a Cardinals draft pick out of high school, but chose to go to JUCO. He's crushing the ball. Double digit home runs, hitting close to .400. He still strikes out a bit more than you'd like, but that has improved over the course of his freshman season.

Garza will be coming in as a sophomore, just like Brock Mathis from NW Florida St. Garza is 6'3" and has played some 1B. If the bat makes the jump to the D1 level, he could be a 1B candidate when he's not catching. He seems to be an insurance policy in case CJ Willis goes pro since they are both big C/1B types.

I’m curious to see Willis’ stock. Apparently he’s had an arm injury this year so hasn’t played that much defense but still hit. That might be enough to slip his stock, unless he’s set on going pro

Turang and Hill are the only 2 commits listed on mlb’s top 100 draft prospect list. Both have mention of having pretty strong commitments to LSU so we might actually keep the majority of our top prospects this class. You never know tho, some guys sign and are just dead set on going pro

I just saw that former Tiger Rankin Woley has committed to Auburn for the upcoming season. Happened last month.

Hitting .463 with 10 home runs and only 12 strike outs in JUCO this season, dude was no joke

MLB.com put out a first round mock draft recently: LINK

Here is a list of the SEC players/commits:
1 . Casey Mize - Auburn
2 . Brady Singer - Florida
5 . Carter Stewart - Miss St (commit)
12. Ryan Rolison - Ole Miss
14. Jonathan India - Florida
15. Cole Winn - Miss St (commit)
16. Brice Turang - LSU (commit)
18. Ethan Hankins - Vandy (commit)
19. Jackson Kowar - Florida
22. Ryan Weathers - Vandy (commit)
23. Kumar Rocker - Vandy (commit)
24. Sean Hjelle - Kentucky
25. Noah Naylor - A&M (commit)
27. Xavier Edwards - Vandy (commit)
28. Connor Scott - Florida (commit)
29. Grayson Rodriguez - A&M (commit)

16 of 30 have SEC ties. That's insane. The only two recruiting classes rated ahead of us for this class are Mississippi State and Vandy. State will absolutely lose their 2 first rounders. Vandy will lose most of theirs, I think one may drop to the point that he gets priced out of the draft.

What makes you say that he’s big on coming here?

Woley was solid every time he got a chance here. Wasn’t he actually just kicked off the team?
