If Garnett has great instincts, he'll get lots of playing time later on. Do NOT underestimate instinct and motor! Luke Kuechly, perhaps THE top linebacker in the NFL, wasn't all that fast out of high school. Even in the pro day, I think I read where he ran a 4.67. A kid that can run 4.4 but takes a half-second to respond or gets lost continually on each play. Or worse, is afraid to tackle, is a liability.

Layton could be a diamond in the rough at 6'3", 245 running a 4.8 40. Ohio State had a Linebacker that was 6'2", 244, ran a 4.8, only did 17 reps of 225 and also had a high motor. James Laurinaitis. This kid will be special.

Bradie James ran a 4.7 at the scouting combine, but his instinct were not that great in the NFL.

Great deal.

Hell my brother was a preferred walk on and would have been starting center on special teams his sophomore year, or non redshirt Freshman year. Nobody gives a shite once you lace them up, what your ranking is, how many stars you have, or who u daddy is. Best part of football. Give them hell.

He does have an offer from Army which I think says a lot. The academies aren't interested in training guys to be officers unless they're sure they can hack it, which at West Point, is no small task. I'm sure he's got his head on straight and he's obviously a great athlete. I mean if he has the work ethic, there's nothing stopping him from having a great career at LSU in my mind.

Congrats LG! Welcome aboard!

Good pick up. I think this guy will work his tail off and be a contributor to this team given some time.

Why is that? Does TOPS have some rule where you can't be involved in extra-curricular activities?

Looks like he could be another great fullback for us too. Kid will be a starter, just watch and see.

It creates an unfair advantage for LSU from a recruiting standpoint.

I don't think that necessarily prevents him from getting other scholarships, but I could be wrong.

That isn't accurate. He can certainly use TOPS and play football. The issue with TOPS and playing football as a preferred walk-on has to do with how he counts against LSU's football scholarship numbers, not whether he can do it.

I have multiple friends that play baseball at D1 colleges in La and their scholarships from the schools is what is left after TOPS... Is this a new rule or does in only apply to football?

This. He obviously hasn't reached his ceiling. Watch his sophomore year (MLB) and senior year (DE) tape and you can obviously see his growth. 1 year with Beck and 4-5 years with Aranda - I believe Garnett is a name we will hear mentioned a lot on Saturday Nights in Death Valley.

I think its just for football. I've always thought you can't use any other scholarship for football because of Bear Bryant sneaking around schollie limits by giving kids tennis scholarships to play football. So now if you play football and you're on scholarship of any kind, it counts against football's numbers.

But I MAY be wrong...

TOPS gives an advantage for us in baseball, right?
