When I said months ago that if CBK sees a running QB in the portal, he’d bring him in and Nuss would be QB2 again ….. I got shouted down.

Now look. Every day, another thread about some QB we need to bring in.

CBK likes having a running QB. And after JD5 ….. Nuss should be very worried.

That’s a really cool story, but he’s not a running QB.

From 2021, yes. Two Heisman winners and Quinn Ewers who could win it next year.

2022 portal class was horrible and 2023 doesn’t look any better.

What are you babbling about? FSU’s 2nd string QB won games for them last season when Travis was injured. He doesn’t suck. It was their 3rd stringer that was the issue.

frick this small-minded bullshite. This isn’t 2018. We have the staff to develop a big-time incoming talent at QB. We don’t need a hired gun. Now is the time to cement LSU as a destination for top QB recruits, especially after a similar opportunity was wasted after 2019.

Also, recruits don’t follow a fricking transfer QB to help you build momentum for a top 1-3 class. Top 1 or 2 QBs can be that foundation piece because they commit early and usually stay committed throughout the process. They are what you sell to everyone else who’s looking to win a title. We already have the #1 WR recruit committed. Harlem Berry should commit in a few days. Get Underwood and you have the makings of a #1 class that’s stacked on both sides of the ball. Dropping $1 mil+ on Cam Ward, who isn’t a sure thing even with his experience, for a season won’t get you any of that.

So what would you rather Kelly do? Go into next season with only one QB with significant experience? See some of yall haven't played sports so I get it...you're emotional about it and get in your feelings but I guarantee that Kelly spoke to Nuss from jump about this explaining to him of the importance to go into the portal for a QB to protect him. Nuss is going into next season with the job being HIS to lose. BUT he still has to EARN it. Seniority doesn't mean shite if you can't perform. And well we've seen Kelly give a lot of veterans PT who definitely shouldn't have so we know his loyalty to veteran experience. So there's nothing that should make me think that Nuss wouldn't start Week 1 unless he has a very very bad camp.

Every coach likes having a running QB as long as they can pass. If you have a choice between a QB who can just throw or a QB that can throw and run, you’re an idiot to not take the QB that can do both. It completely opens up the offense. But the key is they have to be able to throw 1st. And you’re seeing a lot more of those coming up because the more you see them in college and the NFL, the more guys who would have been WRs growing up 20-25 years ago, are being put at QB where they can affect the game more.

But 1) there’s more than 1 kind of running QB. Jayden Daniels is a fricking unicorn. I woke up at 4 this morning (on accident) and put on an LSU YouTube video in the background and started doing some work. The video ended and went straight to the LSU/Clemson NC game. I had to watch. I forgot just how much Clemson dominated the 1st quarter, and how much the game was in doubt so deep into the 2nd quarter. We had 6 total yards after our 1st 2 possessions. Burrow had like 36 yards passing after our 1st 3 possessions. Then he started hitting all these 9, 10, 20 yard runs to move the chains. Escaping impossible pockets, spinning around, and either running for yards or escaping the pocket and throwing to Chase on the run. Hit him for a couple 50+ yard passes down the right sideline. Wound up with like 250+ yards passing and 56 yards rushing at half. 2 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD on a QB draw up the middle. And we went from being down 17-7 to up 28-17 in like 8 game minutes. And almost all started (or continued) with Burrow’s feet. I don’t think Nuss has that, but he’s not Met, and there’s more than 1 way to skin a cat.

I think what Kelly really likes is a big, old, OL, with talented TEs. I am very interested to see how Kelly/Denbrock/Sloan change the offense next year. I think we’ll run the ball a lot, use 12 personnel a lot, and take advantage of that by being very play-action oriented. I think Nuss will hit on a lot of explosive plays, but not at the rate of Jayden, because I don’t think he’ll need to. We’ll be able to be more selective and set things up throughout the game. I’m not sure he’ll throw as much as Jayden, but he might have similar passing yards. BUT, he’ll have to prove he can extend plays and DRIVES with his legs. I think he’s a good enough athlete to. But Kelly and do have seen him enough the last 2 years to know if he’s got that in him. It will be obvious by who we go after in the portal.

I don’t think guys that can run that have multiple years of eligibility would be an indictment on Nuss. But if we sign a dual threat that’s either older than Nuss or has the same eligibility, that will speak volumes.if you can’t at least move the chains with your legs/feet a little bit, you’re behind, because most of the best teams have QBs that can.

I expect Kelly and co to do their due diligence and explore every QB in the portal. But I think Nuss is just athletic enough to go with his big arm and big balls, quite frankly—I think his “moxie” is one of his best traits. I expect him to be the QB in ‘24 and do well. But we don’t get to see him every day. If we sign somebody that’s a big enough threat that he enters the portal, I think it’s simply because we think that guy might open up the offense more. Which, depending on the progress of the defense, we may desperately need.

We’ll see. I think Nuss is our starter next year. But if he’s not, oh well. I hope he finds a better fit and balls out.

Shaduer Sanders going from the SWAC, behind a shite OL and playing in the power 5 with a bunch of transfers, 69% 3230 yards 27 TD 3 int plus 4 rush TDs in 11 games.

Hartman where ND had zero returning players with more than 25 catches, 63% 2670 yards 24 TD 8 int, 123 rush yards 3 TD

Graham Mertz who was terrible at Wisconsin and came to UF who only had one good returning WR and mediocre at best OL, 73% 2900 yards 8.1 ypa 20 TD 3 int, 4 rush TD

Haynes King, who went to a terrible program trying to change from the triple option the past 3 years, with a brand new coach, 62% 2755 yards 26 TD 15 int 650 yards rushing 9 TDs.

FSU had a good backup and won a conference championship with their third string. You will never get a backup good enough to please the committee or be equivalent to your starter. At least not with the constant transfers bullshite. The reality though is that nearly every person crying about "backup" immediately gives away they just want to replace Nuss.

According to the pay sites, they have been. The problem is the overwhelming majority of the QBs in the portal want to go to a place where the expectation is that the starting job is theirs to lose with not much competition in the way. And that won't be the expectation at LSU.

No. One of my son's friends plays for the Longhorns and says bad decision maker...Sark has tried everything and not really working. He will want a bag anyway.

Read an interview he gave and he’s very clearly wanting a clear path to play. I don’t think he’s got any interest in competing for a job.

That’s where it gets tricky for the coaches is finding someone solid but also someone who is ok with maybe being a backup at the end of the day

1. Limited sample size but Murphy was very unimpressive in his starts this season

2. He is not a runner AT ALL which doesnt mean we wont look at a QB but considering his passing left a lot to be desired I dont know why we'd go after him
