Brown is a welcome addition to the cornerback room, but I don’t view him in the same lens I viewed Denver Harris, Mekhi Garner, Jarrick Bernard-Converse, or Zy Alexander. For one, the size is not comparable to any of the names I mention, but two, the lack of playing time at Ohio State means you’re taking a massive shot in the dark that he can play at the SEC level. After a year where the cornerback position was attacked, adding a sub 6-foot corner with little tape is not the route I was expecting. This was not a can’t-miss prospect out of high school. He got to Ohio State and got passed up by incoming freshmen as a sophomore and was unable to get any run. If not for injuries, he likely hardly plays as a freshman too.

Perhaps the hope is that he can compete in the Nickel spot in 2024, but nowadays we see how slot receivers are used and I don’t love that matchup.

I understand cornerback is a position of need, but with LSU pressed against the 85-man cap, it surprises me the staff is willing to take this big of a chance on Brown with how many needs are still on this defense. Ashton Stamps, Javien Toviano, Sage Ryan, JK Johnson, and Jeremiah Hughes isn’t an ideal cornerback room, but I’m not sure what Brown provides to that group that can elevate them in 2023.
