From Nashville Tennessean"

"The Mustangs struggled last season, finishing 4-6. Kevin Mawae was fired in his only season as coach after the school was banned from the 2023 and 2024 TSSAA playoffs for a TSSAA recruiting violation."

I'd fire him too if he was recruiting and still had a 4-6 record

Publicly, Mawae seems like a good guy. But it also seems like the coaching world doesn't really want him. He's been at several stops and doesn't stay longer than a year or so....without really moving up in the ranks. In fact, he's kind of gone backwards.

Keyshawn Johnson said he was the/a "whistleblower" at Arizona St., which got into trouble with the NCAA under Herm Edwards. Mawae denied it and Johnson backtracked on those claims. But given Mawae went from the NFL to HS football makes you wonder if he hasn't been blackballed from the NFL/college to some degree OR if he's difficult to work with.

Several years ago he was a weekly guest on Culotta's morning radio show and he clearly was hoping to get a job on LSU's staff. That never happened

Was it Kevin who a lot on here (coaching board) were suggesting we hire as the Offensive Line coach?

Edit: never mind, answered in post above.

His predecessor at Lipscomb was Trent Dilfer. He was replaced by Dilfer’s top assistant/recruiter.

A friend has a son on that Lipscomb team. They are wanting someone to recruit against the big private schools in town according to him and Mawae wasn't very good at that.

Coaching is a grind and it's hard for millionaire former NFL players to do it. Few legit stars ever make it work.

Yeah and he has openly campaigned for a job, but until recently didn’t want to get experience elsewhere first. People have a bad notion that being a great player will automatically translate to being a good coach, and if you aren’t willing to grind your way up a bit, it’s hard to imagine that’s the guy you want for the job unless he proves himself elsewhere. Thankfully we have other people making those decisions and ended up with Brad Davis the last go around.

What was the violation? Not being good at recruiting?

The Deuce Knight kid moved with his sister from Mississippi into an apartment in Nashville without getting a court order naming her his guardian. The school never bothered filing any paperwork anyway. But state high school rules require a kid reside with a legal guardian before being eligible. The state org found that a violation and shut the case. What they didn’t release was what SEC football program was paying for the apartment. Knight went back to Mississippi after Lipscomb was beat by IMG and an Alabama team. The end was near for Mawae.
