I know we always talk about passing the eye test, but this kid is a flat out monster. He was a 3 year starter for Ruston and had 12 tackles in the state championship game. Some say he is 5’10 and some say 6’, but his play on the field…..maybe LSU doesn’t recruit him, but he will be a star at La Tech, if he stays.

Speigs top players in the Dome:

quote:

7. LB Jadon Mayfield – Louisiana Tech
Ruston (La.) LB Jadon Mayfield was a standout last year in the Division I non-select contest. The Louisiana Tech commitment had a game-leading 9.5 tackles, including 2 TFL, 7 solo stops and 2 sacks. Mayfield also saw key carries on offense and also saw snaps in blocking roles for Bearcats’ power run formations.

Mayfield, a four-year starter, is a tad undersized but pesky in the middle of the Ruston defense. He’s had an impact playing multiple positions in the second level as well as playing off the line of scrimmage. He’s speedy roaming to the sidelines and attacks the ball, wraps up well in the open field, and has a knack for jarring balls loose.

If I am not wrong, he had 12 tackles this year and 9 last year in the Dome. This year he didn’t play as much behind the QB as the last two years. But he only started varsity 3 years. They have him listed at 5’10 / 225lbs.

He attacks the ball in a similar fashion to Devin White. Some would say he is the best linebacker in the state this year and I would agree.

He's built like a truck. The only reason I think he's not as highly rated is he's a bit short (which I don't think is a big deal) and he seems a little stiff with not great lateral agility.

Seems like he's built like baskerville.

What made baskervolle a top 250 recruit, and this kid barely ranked?

Seems odd with his performance all yr and in title game. Would think colleges want rb builds that can cover vs lumbering big mlbs of old

If he's a star at LA Tech, LSU will have a chance to recruit him again in 1 or 2 years thanks to the portal.

Baskerville had great agility. I've never seen this guy play, but a poster above said he is short and does not have great lateral agility. If true, I've heard enough, and he does not merit an offer.

If he is just short, but is above 220 pounds and can move, then bring him on. I liked Sam Mills A LOT!

Kinda reminds me on Kevin Minter. Ruston has a junior lber Zheric Hill that flies around really well too. Loaded defense. Aidan Anding is a Jr cb to watch as well

Which means he may be 5'8" and 200lbs. The recruiting sites have him listed at 6' or 6'0.5" at 220lbs so 5'10" may be the truth.

He might be a great player, but this board never ceased to amaze me. People complain about signing 3 star players and people complain when we don't sign 3 star players.

In the end I trust the man that has been a head coach for 33 straight years and has never fired to evaluate the talent he needs. It seems like other top programs feel the same as the offer sheet is what it is.

Great point, its made the four year university signing like an upgraded juco

You do have to figure some will feel jaded by the process but it is what it is

At the game in the dome Saturday I was asking about him bc I’ve been following him all year. Some were saying they heard he wants to stay in Ruston and wants to play at Tech. Why I have no clue. He was clearly the best player on that Ruston Defense all year long. Kyle Williams coached the hell out of that guy.

I've also seen him in person and agree. He's at least 5'11. I don't think he stays at LATech his whole career.

We have Perkins and Weeks for the lateral speed. We need someone to be able to tackle inside the box and this guy looks good there. His read/react is really good. If he happens to grow another 2-3 inches, thats just icing.

We need tackling machines. He looks like he could be good at that. I’m sure we could use him on ST’s as well. Either that or get someone who is even better in the portal. I like our young LBs but they’re young. Hopefully one or two come in ready to play.

Some may not agree but Mayfield can play his first year at any program. I have watched him since junior high and he has always been “that kid”. 3 years - Semi finals, 2 trips to the Dome and one Championship.

He has clearly been the anchor of the defense for 3 years. Zheric Hill is up next but Mayfield will always be mentioned with the best LBs to come out of Ruston, really N Louisiana.

He was selected as the LSWA 5A MVP this year. He is now a 3 time 1st Team All-State selection. This kid is just a football player. Very good understanding of the game. Always in the right place because of how well he prepares. He signed with Tech and likes the idea of staying home to play. He is going to be a star at Tech.
