LSU is one of the best at using the portal. Careful what you wish for

We're going to get to a point where we're not getting a dozen+ players from the portal each year. We're really only doing this because we've had to fill out a depleted roster.

If you recruit high school well enough the portal should really be about getting a few elite guys and that's it, maybe a depth guy here and there due to unforeseen circumstances, but you arent seeing the top programs (Bama, OSU, UGA, etc) necessarily loading up in the portal so far.

1 Elite player like a Caleb Williams can make a bigger impact on a program than a dozen other portal players potentially. Look at USC as a prime example of that. They took a ton of defensive portal players this past cycle (12 literally) and their defense was still trash. They got Caleb Williams at QB and that was by far a bigger impact than everyone they took on defense combined.

Gibbs at Bama another good example.

These are the types you want from the portal and in small numbers ultimately if you recruited high school well enough and have a good program culture.

Even if they only want 5-6, it still benefits LSU.

As for the conference stuff, it will get a lot less relevant pretty soon here.

LSU has 3 transfers from other SEC schools

Denver Harris from A&M
Aaron Anderson from Alabama
Jalen Lee from Florida

2 transfers to other schools

Radar Jones to Miss State
Demario Tolan to Auburn

Honestly think LSU is winning in this.

Limiting intraconference transfers would just mean more players transferring out of the SEC. The conference does not want that.

Ok, so then how about a rule where LSU can poach anyone they want from any other SEC school but we get to keep everyone we want to keep? Can someone call Woodward and ask him why he hasn't made that happen yet?

I think there should be a three year commitment…otherwise transfer with a 1 year penalty.

Did you post this when we got Denver Harris? Even though we lose Tolan, the portal has been our saving grace

Yes, getting some players from other SEC teams has helped us in the short term. However, in the long term it’s better for the conference to not have teams poaching directly from each other. I said that at the beginning when the SEC was first debating whether they would allow it. It was a mistake and I hope they see it now. I’m sure the bottom 6-8 programs are already complaining and even the top programs have lost some really notable players, a few of whom have been very successful.

Unfortunately, it’s going to have to be a P5 decision as a whole for this to really work. Any conference that steps out and outlaws intraconference transfers on their own will subject its teams to negative recruiting for “restricting players’ freedom of movement.” But if all of the conferences make the move together, there’s no risk of any of that.

ETA- mark my worlds. Some form of cap on intraconference transfers will be in place within the next 3 years because of Freeze at Auburn. Bama, LSU, UGA and a couple of others have cherry-picked guys. He’s going to take it too far and the other top programs will take action to handcuff him.

IMO the SEC needs to stop this. Nothing sucks more than losing a kid to another SEC school due to tampering (which we all know goes down). I understand that if an athlete wants to transfer, but you shouldn’t be able to skip around in conference. Rambling done… for now.

lol LSU has gotten, Mekhi Wingo, Joe Foucha, Greg Brooks, Denver Harris, and Aaron Anderson in the portal just the last 2 years.

LSU isn't like other lower tier schools. Unless kids aren't getting playtime or being a detriment to the team (aka Eli Ricks), LSU won't be losing star players. Losing Tolan sucks, but Mizzu lost guys like Lovett at WR this year and Wingo at DT last year. Unless you're being caring for the whole SEC, I don't see why you'd want to change it. LSU will come out the winner more times than not.

As long as a school can replace players and bring in enough to have a full 85 man Roster I do not have a problem with any kid transferring.

If it ever gets to the point that a school can only bring in a set number (25) regardless of the number of players who choose to leave then that would be very difficult to support.

Why? So we can make TCU the new Georgia right beside us? frick that. All you'd be doing is sending the best conference's players off to schools like Ohio State, TCU, etc. making their conferences better. Don't like it? Bid more. Be happy you root for LSU and not someone else because we're in better position than most.

I somewhat agree. Buy I think it should be across the board with the NCAA D1. If it's only the SEC that puts this rule back in place, then many guys will simply leave and go to schools outside of the SEC. That only serves to weaken the conference. IMO, that's why I don't believe it will happen until the entire NCAA does it.

Bid more… We don’t have the funds other schools have bro. And yea lets have Bama tamper with players during the season or immediately after.

Seriously? Have you compared LSU to what other schools are doing? LSU is top 5 right now for how NIL is setup. Are we having any trouble signing top 5 HS classes AND top 5 transfer classes?

I wouldn't be shocked if Louisiana tax payer money is somehow being funneled to money bags. This is a football state they're not going to let anyone just roll over them especially with Louisiana's corrupt arse political system. You have no idea how shady some LSU boosters are. There's boosters who donate big to LSU because they see bigger returns like energy contracts on the campus.
