IMG Academy and its pull of top-flight recruits nationwide has naturally troubled high school coaches across the country.

And Texas High School Coaches Association president Glen West has now spoken out on the subject as loudly as any critic.

The head coach at Brenham High School, where former LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee played his final two prep seasons, wrote that IMG Academy could "destroy our profession" in the opening letter of February's "Texas Coach" magazine, according to the Dallas Morning News' "Sports Day."

Destroy the profession of educating young people through athletics? Private schools can't escape demonization in TX either. Other young people will gladly take the spot left by the top athletes going to these academies.

Unless he means something else by his profession.

There will always be plenty of players that don't go to elite sports academies.

This is stupid.

They're just mad their occasional superstar does this and their team isn't as good. Coach what you've got.

Its the sleazy future of athletics. I would like to see it go away. Enough with the professionalization of high school athletics.

I don't think he's just talking about IMG. I think he's referring to the idea of the school and if more and more of the schools start popping up they could ruin sports for public schools that wont be able to compete.

They will be able to compete. Just with one less kid who happens to be their best player. Boo Hoo. They don't own the kid. He doesn't "belong" to their district. He's a free human being and he can do what he wants. Like you and I do. And maybe some other kid, not quite as talented, gets an opportunity to play HS sports that he would not have otherwise had. And maybe the Coach realizes at the HS level, that's what counts. Kids being educated, going to class, playing sports, chasing girls, etc. It's not all Friday Night Lights bullshite.

Trust me, I'm no IMG fan. But that is the kind of thing that comes along with living in a country where people are the architects of their own lives.

Compete with who? You don't have to ever play them!

My guess is the NFHS will cut the legs out from under these types of football-mill schools within the next few years and they'll die out.

I agree 100%.

We are seeing what had to be HS athletics being turned into an amature set up. I hate to see 15-16 year olds being thrust into a big world ready to fleece them of their youth.

I knew the day would come though.

Sounds like he's having a ridiculous knee jerk reaction and making something huge out of something minor. He must be an LSU fan.

Being a Texan, and former high school coach for 3 years, I agree with what coach West is saying.

IMG sells themselves by saying they will make them a better player, and develop them into college athlete. Its all bull crap.

They go out, and poach the best players from around the country, that already have 4*'s and offers abound. If they went out and poached a 2* kid and made him into a 4* that would be impressive, but that's not at all what they do..

As a coach in Texas, you get kids from within your community, coach and develop them for 6 years (from the 7th grade) in many cases, and build your team from the ground up. Its a community game, not an all star/traveling squad you put together. Through coaching and community support, not by raiding the rosters from around the country.

He has every right to speak up, let his feelings be known, jump out in front of this, and hopefully stop IMG from being a problem here.

Personally... in comparison to some of the coaches I've dealt with... if my kid could get into an academy like IMG, I'd gladly send him.

Yes these are 4* kids that they're "poaching" - but those 4* kids have already determined that they will be playing college football somewhere, the coaches at their local school may not (most likely can't) be able to help the player grow as much as he could at a location that specializes in growth within a sport.

Parents are already spending big money on personal trainers for these kids for various sports, this is just taking it one step further. I'd gladly allow my son to go to IMG Academy vs trying to match that potential for growth here at the local high school. That said - if he attended one of the schools that has a great coaching staff, great facilities, and the ability to support his growth adequately - I'd recommend him staying (here we have good coaches that I love on a personal level, but again I'd send my boy to IMG in a heartbeat with our situation).

if one looks into IMG closer, it is discovered that not that many top football players attend and they have very limited numbers of scholarships available. the tuition is about $75,000 per year!

IMG needs tuition paying students to survive. they also are bigger in golf and tennis with pretty wealthy people as their "clients" (ie, parents of students).

football is kind of an experiment with them and they are doing it hoping that their top players hire them as agents one day. neverthe less, imo, they are not a threat to high school football much less destroying it.

I completely agree with the coach. I coached for a few years and I can assure you that just one player can make or break a season. These guys devote their life to developing young kids. They emphasize family and team all the while on a teachers salary. You finally get a solid group to buy in to your vision then boom, IMG comes in and takes your best player. Who knows, it may be 5-10 years before the dominoes fall the right way for you again. He sees this a threat because it may become the norm with these super schools being created more and more. I agree it is a threat to his profession.
