I think this is Coach Kelly's ideal near term goal for the LSU QB position.

This year: Nuss with the current backups.
2025: Nuss with Bryce Underwood as backup.
2026: Underwood with backup (maybe Hurley).
2027: Underwood with Elijah Haven as backup.
2028: Elijah Haven with unknown backup.
2029: Elijah Haven with unknown backup.

I would say Swan or Collins.

As gifted as Underwood is, him starting as a freshman in the SEC is not ideal. Maybe by the middle to the end of his freshman season but out the gate might be too much to ask for a freshman.

I don't see Hurley being here in 2026 as a backup, he will transfer before that

But yes, ideally Nuss for 24 and 25
Underwood doesn't have to get thrown to the wolves in 25 but set up for 26 and 27
Followed by Haven

I think the portal, get a guy like Holstein to come home. Having a really good season so far at Pitt.

I just don't see Nuss returning. Just using a random ESPN list, here are the top quarterbacks in the country.

1. Beck
2. Gabriel
3. Ewers
4. Milroe
5. Fifita
6. Dart
7. Daniels
8. Sanders
9. Rising
10. Ward

The only names I think would get taken over Nuss, right now, are Ewers, Sanders, Dart, and maybe Ward. Nuss is likely QB3-5. He's also a guy that will dominate any pro day or combine setting because he can make all the throws.

That, on top of the fact that in '25 he'd be replacing 4/5 OL starers, WR1 and WR3, TE1, RB1. Just not where you want to be in your money year. If he's anywhere from a late first to early third round guy, he should probably take it.

Unless Underwood comes in and blows the doors off of the competition, I think Collins will for sure get the first shot. BK and Sloan have shown they want experience and development in that spot.

Pretty rare for 1 year starter to hit the NFL early, it certainly happens and Nuss is a 4th year guy already but for now I would tend to lean him coming back to start another season. Anything can happen though for sure and nothing would surprise me. If he turned it on big the 2nd half of the season he could really make a name for himself in the draft. Another thing to consider there is he is losing 4/5 OLineman who have kept him remarkably clean this season and Lacy/Daniels as well as Taylor probably.

Eli Holstein is a redshirt freshman. He's not coming to LSU to fight with the #1 qb in high school for the next 3 years.

Yeah that's what I deduced in my post

I just think he's not setting himself up for success by coming back next year. Way too much risk.

which means he's draft eligible after next year. If he keeps playing like he is he's going to transfer to a big time school this offseason with the hopes of going to the NFL after next season

He would be draft-eligible as a redshirt sophomore. A big year here and he would be set to go. If not, then he moves on and transfers again.

I don’t think this happens, but I could see where some kids would take a chance on themselves based on the talent that would be around them here.

Why would he risk giving up a starting job to potentially ride the bench behind a freshman?

If he comes to LSU he would win the job hands down. He will have a year at Bama and a full year starting for Pitt and looks the part.

I think you guys need to temper your expectations on Underwood. He looks great but the jump from high school to college isnt a walk in the park.

Lagway was an awesome high school QB and he didn’t beat out Mertz. Holstein will be better than Mertz by year 3.
