How Much Difference Between 4 star and 5 Star Recruits

Past 5 Star Tigers. Remember Malachi Dupre and Trey Quinn. Both 5 star “ can’t miss” guys. I’ll take 16 4 ** over a couple of 5’s

Cherry picking a couple of 5 star guys that didn't live up to the hype is silly

Reality is classes can’t be predominantly 5-star players. The recruiting services don’t rate that many kids that high every year.
So, a mix of 4 & 3-star kids, with more 4 than 3, properly evaluated by the staff, can do just fine.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down on the logic there, buddy. It's of no use here.

I don’t think Trey Quinn was a 5 star anywhere

The difference between a high 4 star and a 5 star is really almost nothing. You have to remember that this just measures potential, not work ethic, injury proneness, maturity etc.
My little brother would have probably been a 4/5 star today as Steve Largent told him that personally at a camp. He didn’t play much more in college than I did. I would have been a 2/3 star at best.

Recruiting websites overall are a big scam to a certain degree. Those services want to sell subscriptions, so naturally when a certain program has a lot of subscribers, those recruits are going to get a bump in stars once they commit because it keeps the subscribers happy.
Now with the transfer portal and NIL, those services are having to revamp how they do business because a large portion of recruits jump ship after one year or two. As far as accuracy, it's about 50-50. They hit on some and miss on just as many, but you never hear about those because that's not good for business.
The reality is if you have a top 10 recruiting class, you've done very well based on recruiting websites, but you really won't know the real value of a recruiting class until 3 or 4 years down the road because a large portion of those recruits will be on another team's roster.

Quinn was not a 5* and plenty of people were not sure how he would do because of his size.

Sure I'll take 16 3*s over 1 5* But I'd rather have 14 4*s and a couple of 5*s than 16 4*s. You can find more 4 *s who didn't pan out for LSU than 5*s who didn't. Heck, probably more 4*s who didn't pan out than 5*s who committed here ever.

That is actually impressive how successful they are rating 5 stars

Cool stats, thanks for posting.
I wonder if that fifth star affects the odds of being drafted. I mean from a psychological or expectation perspective, rather than the actual college production.

Zero difference. You must develop the talent

Trey Quinn never sniffed a 5th star.
You can you John Emery as an example though. Or Keiland Williams.

I mean it gets you more chances to get on the field…

I think what owl said is true to a certain extent. 5 stars get more chances, 2nd and 3rd chances than a 3 star would. Some guys just develop late

I look at stars more as a metric for probability of success more than a direct comparative analysis. Additionally the higher rated kids generally have better physical attributes for football.
