Getting Weston Davis back is huge IMO. This seems like a Brad Davis failure. Kiffin must like him. He was not a 5* for nothing. It is a real good start having Moore (C), Davis (T), Solomon (G/T) to start your process. Cannot wait to see what the Tigers bring in on rest of OL.

Agree. The frame is there. Coach him up.

I wouldn't say "huge".

Id rather retain young players that have seen playing time than not, however.

People love to mention that he was a 5-star, but let’s not forget that there was some discrepancies in his evaluation as a high school recruit One service said he was a 5 star player, another (probably more) disagreed.

Maybe he’ll play his way to being an elite lineman, but he’s got a long way to go

He deserves some new coaching
All the blame shouldn’t fall on him

The others had him rated as a high 4 star I believe. He was a very highly touted recruit at the time.

Will be interesting how their line stacks up against Miami.

I just told my LSU friend that Davis was coming back and he wasn’t happy. I said that no player from last year should be judged because of how bad the Kelly regime was.

I think putting all the blame on Brian, Kelly or the offensive line coach is a bit like collective wish casting. There were multiple instances caught on video replay of all of these lineman, including Davis, literally just letting defensive lineman waltz through the line and get a sack. Showing virtually no resistance at all. Some of the fault lies on the players, not executing, you can’t blame it all on coaching.

Has there been anything official stating Thomas would be back? I just assumed he’d leave once Atkins was gone…

I agree and should have phrased it better. I think the locker room was toxic and players just kinda gave up. Not saying that is the right thing to do on the players part.

Why do you keep saying this? If we get any from there, it will backups. 2 are out of eligibility and they have supposedly re-signed the other 3 starters.

Also, their position coach stayed at OM. This seems like the least likely position there that we will have leverage on.

This is going to be the ultimate shooting the bird at BK, when Lane turns this dude into a 1st round pick.

For the millionth time: There are multiple breakdowns showing the translation of recruiting rankings to draft results. They all say the same thing. Over 60%+ of 5 stars are drafted, and most in the first three rounds. High 4 stars aren’t far behind those numbers.

When you have an entire starting OL made up of 4 and 5 star players and they are all underperforming across the board, there’s undoubtedly a coaching problem. The numbers tell us there’s likely only 1, maybe 2 busts in the group. The rest are struggling in large part because they aren’t playing with proper technique and don’t know their assignments. We’ve all seen multiple instances of this broken down in film studies.

Are there instances of players outperforming coaching under Davis? Sure. Dellinger, Campbell and Jones from the previous OL. Adams and Moore from this one, but only one of those two was developed by Davis. It’s also worth noting that Josh Thompson played well against Big 10 competition and was still completely underwhelming here.

Atkins isn’t getting a P4 OL or TE job this cycle. All of the good spots have already been filled and he’s been let go from his last two gigs after poor seasons. He was a fall guy at FSU, but he showed here that’s he’s definitely not a P4-level OC and play caller. The TEs also didn’t notably improve. He didn’t help himself at all this year.

So unless Thomas is following Atkins as an analyst or to a G5 gig, his best option may be to take the money and opportunity here.

And I said nothing about recruiting busts.

You typed a whole paragraph agreeing with me about players performing poorly or ‘underachieving’. That’s not a coaching issue, their performance is at least mostly if not partly, their own fault.

They are not animatronic robots out there being controlled by a coaches joy stick. They’re actual humans who have control of their own bodies.

How many OL arrive in the P2 and start as true freshmen? Needless to day, it’s a very small number and there’s good reason for that. OL rarely have been taught how to use leverage and advanced technique in high school. Practice time is limited and that’s one of the most difficult positions at the college level in terms of assignments and technical demand.

If players aren’t taught what to do when they get to the college level, then they are doomed to struggle. Only a very small number are so physically imposing that they can play well in spite of technical deficiencies. Are you really making excuses for Brad Davis’ universally acknowledged poor coaching here?

What the frick do you expect players who don’t know what they are doing to do? Just get lucky? Figure it out for themselves? Yes, they have a responsibility to execute what they are taught, but when what they are taught is substandard, even when they do execute as asked the results won’t suddenly be good.
