Stars still matter. They aren't the end-all be-all, but they matter.

I remember people melting on here when it was being said that Jefferson was looking like one of the better receivers in camp and moving up the depth chart They said it must mean our talent at the WR position sucks.

JJ was a two star because he was expected to be a non-qualifier. It took all the way to the end of summer for him to get eligible. I have no idea what his rating would have been if he was clear of that.

The teams that hoist the trophy at year's end are ALWAYS top 10, if not top 5 in recruiting. The odd JJ or honey bear doesn't change this fact.

Hassan Reddick was a WALK ON at TEMPLE. He became a first round pick and is now an all-pro for the Eagles. Temple signs 25 players that were slightly better than Reddick every year (coming out of HS). Once every couple of decades, a diamond emerges from programs like that. They never win big though because they don't recruit at a high level.

You need to stack blue chip on top of blue chip to win big in college football. Luckily, LSU is one of the half dozen or so schools that can do this. All the others are just whistling Dixie.

That’s not how star ratings work

Amen. No matter how many times the paths of Jefferson, Hester, or Arik Gilbert are recited as proof that "rankings don't matter," the results actually show that programs with sustained on field success and hardware to prove it are sustained top recruiters who stack top 250 and top 100 talent year after year. Absorbing a miss like a Brockermeyer is possible when you have waves of top talent to develop.

So, even though rankings can fail on the micro level where there is a lot of volatility, rankings are meaningful on the macro level.

Jefferson is a great story. Bama, Georgia, and even LSU are also great stories built on the foundation of stacking talent.

For some reason there is a major disconnect for people on this issue despite clear evidence.

That is exactly how star ratings work. The services are not going to pump somebody up that cant qualify. This story has been told by JJ himself.

You may not have to have a top 5 recruiting class to win any other conference but the SEC is different. The winner of the SEC is always a top 5, most stars, recruiter.

He didn’t have the grades, didn’t camp anywhere other than lsu, wasn’t going anywhere other than LSU if he could qualify. He was 100% ignored by the services. Every time he showed up the the lsu camp nobody could guard him. Only person who gave him a battle was Amik Robertson, which still baffles me that he wasn’t offered.

Let’s see, LSU lost out on a 5* TE, signed a 3* TE. The 5* caught like 3 passes for 11 yards. The guy we got looks to be developing into the 5* player. Helped beat bama.

I usually trust a staff over a paid scout, or I trust myself at watching a player.

I was invited to Russell Shepard’s high school, met up with the OC and DC from a college. They were there to scout 3 DB’s. I was given the numbers of the three. After practice is was asked by the OC my thoughts. I said, all three are very good players, close to the same size, play good man coverage, will go up for the ball, not scared to tackle. You could change jerseys, you couldn’t tell them apart. I’d offer all three. The OC looked to the DC and said, what did I tell you. They had just offered all three. An signed all three.

I went to a Parkview game in BTR, called an OC I know in Tx, told him about a kid, I said, in your offense and Special Teams. this kid will average over 150 yards a game. He pulled up tape, by the time he got to BTR, the young man had got an offer from Michigan and gave them a verbal.

Not sure what numbers you are asking about. I did not even know he was a person until he signed with LSU as he entered Fall camp. Below is an excerp from his LSU Bio...

quote:

HIGH SCHOOL
An athletic player who excelled on both sides of the ball in high school … Rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and Scout … Recorded 44 receptions for 956 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior … Ranked the No. 76 player in Louisiana in the 2017 class by 247Sports and Rivals … Excelled in track and field in high school … Shined as a kick returner for Destrehan High School … Named the New Orleans Male Athlete of the Week for the week of November 17.
