Stamps had minor surgery recently regarding this

Yeah, "minor surgery" is when the surgery is not yours right? Stamps first injury this season was a hamstring one. Then he had a groin injury. His surgery was described by Stamps himself as a "core muscle" one. I wasn't his surgeon so I can't comment on how his injuries affected his game but my guess is it didn't help.

LSU needs no more CBs unless someone like Bussey wants to come to LSU or unless some CBs from LSU enter the portal. LSU has 13 CBs which is more than enough and once again, I see a lot more talent there than you and some others do. On the DT front, it again depends on who if anyone gets moved inside. I would be shocked if Paris Shand doesn't end up at DT and he is a good player. S Jones will get passed up if he stays outside because he simply isn't fast enough to play on the end. Thus, I would expect him to go to DT also.

Very good points and I hope to the good lord himself you’re right. I have a good feeling we’ll bring in a couple experienced DT’s during the next portal opening. We’ll be fine

Last year I thought they would bulk Wiggins up and put him inside, but they didn't. This year I'm hoping they do it with Shand or Jones.

We haven’t added a single player at these positions that will take us to the next level. Hopefully the coaching changes will bridge that gap some. But until you bring in the studs the results won’t be what you want. This league is too good to try and coach up average players consistently.

Guys we brought in are fine for filling out a roster but not necessarily for becoming great. Unfortunately you have to pay a lot for those players now and we don’t seem to be trying too hard for portal guys that can make an impact. I think the Denver Harris project is to blame for that partially. So now we wait till the high school kids can develop but how do you keep them from leaving?

Obviously, The Athletic site disagrees with you. They have LSU going 12-0. I think that is a bit optimistic but they see the same thing I see. As the late Al McGuire said, "the best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores." IMO, you are making an obvious mistake. You are assuming that experience doesn't make players better or you don't believe guys like Stamps, Toriano, Yaites, Howard, Womack, Weeks, etc have talent and therefore won't improve LSU. All of those listed above were TR FR that played some.

One more thing...most of these portal guys have already improved because they are for the most part veteran players. They are close to their ceiling already. They are already experienced.

A lot of guys who would have been working for one of the services in the past is doing similar work for a P5 program today, especially on the recruiting side.

Eh, this works in both directions - the increase in available P5 recruiting/scouting jobs also means that there is a greater overall pool of people with experience in the field for 247 or on3 to hire from. I bet there are more guys with actual industry experience working at those outlets now than at almost any other time. Off the top of my head, for example, I know cooper petagna was the director of player personnel at Washington when they brought in the class(es) that formed the foundation of their 2023 team.

Also, just for what it’s worth, there are definitely reasons someone might prefer to work on the publishing side as opposed to the program side. Recruiting specialists at big programs work crazy hours with crazy travel for less-than-great pay and with very little job security.

Are we in good shape regarding these two positions?

I just don't think so. There isn't any proven talent at corner (now, there is a lot of potential, IMHO), and there just aren't the bodies at DT.

The Spring transfer period may help and positive reports once the Freshmen report may offer some optimism, but I just think we're at least another entire season before we stabilize both those positions.

Isn’t the collective “wisdom” (if that even exists) of the Rant is that there is an urgent need to address on DL and at DB, in that order?
This plea has been been going out for months.
The staff cannot help but hear from the Rantards.
I assume they think they have this under control…

Yes, but Brian Kelly's coaching record is only 283-103-2 with 7 consecutive 10 or more win seasons. I mean, really how much can he really know about college football.

We need at least 2 linemen, 2 cbs, 2 lbs,and a fast def end. Jr college players with experience have not proven

Well, we're definitely not adding 7 new players to the roster from the spring portal ... or period.

If we can get a solid SEC level starter, and a decent rotational DT, that alone would make me incredibly happy. 2 DTs. We may add one or two others, but they would have to be exceptional, proven, with multiple years of eligibility.

They would have to be. We're already 3 past having to drop a player for any we add.

We will have some attrition after spring ball, everyone does, but as it stands right now we would have to lose 5 players to be able to add even the 2 DT I'm praying we get.

It's just not a formula that's gonna allow us to be much more active in the portal than that.

LSU needs no more CBs

So I agree DT is more alarming, but if we are counting on Alexander to be CB1… he’s going to be coming off a knee, just sayin.

We do have bodies at CB. If we want to contend in 2024 we are definitely going to need big news at DT. We have the right guys in charge of that, but unfortunately I think it’s reasonable to say 2025 is probably the year.

New coaches everywhere, concerns over defensive depth (again), 1st year starter at QB. Would love to be proven wrong in ‘24, but we could do much worse than expecting to compete for a natty in 2025.
