and he's going into freshman year...he's a lefty pitcher throwing in the mid 70s...my buddy was a surprised as anyone. I know its not as unusual for this age being looked at for football...but is this the norm for baseball players? Were talking Div 1 SEC school too

Did he attend the schools camp? It very well could be one of the generic letters lots of schools send out seeing as he's just a freshman, he could call the coach, and the coaches tone will show if its just a generic letter or not.

Kids are being "scouted" at 12 and 13 for baseball these days
Wouldn't surprise me if younger

Be careful about the tournaments, unless its a perfect game, or major tournament or showcase, it very well could be a generic letter. UGA is big on generic letters to everyone. A lot of the SEC schools only attend the bigger tournaments instead of the smaller, say USSSA ones. Perfect Game is a huge showcase to the bigger schools
What academics? He's going into his freshman year? Sounds a little generic to me, did they ask him to come to a summer camp? Also ask his coach if they ever talked to the school. If so, it's legit. If not, then I'd be a little hesitant and creeped out.

smaller, say USSSA
I've seen coaches at many USSSA tourneys. The one in Shreveport especially, but that one has teams from Oklahoma, Nebraska, Dallas, Houston, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missisissippi, Tennessee, etc.

Recruiting letters are the worst. I would read a lot for my brother and they were all BS. A lot of stuff like "Did you know LSU has a top landscape architecture school" kisses, Coach Les Miles

Recruiting letters are becoming fairly common these days. It's really neat to see the ones that are handwritten though. I've seen a lot of SEC letters (especially Texas A&M) where the envelope is obviously handwritten and detailed by some coeds in the sports department.

The ones by Mississippi State's DC are crazy.

That wouldn't be a smaller USSSA tournament if it has teams from around the region....

Gotcha, I thought you were saying USSSA was smaller. Yeah, they're not going to be at the random 6 team tourney in Bogalusa.

Sounds like just a generic letter basically saying "Hey. We got your name from a team roster for some tournament. We don't really know anything about you, or if you will ever become a great baseball player. However on the off chance that you do, just remember that we started recruiting you in the 9th grade."
I'm sure coaches probably send out those letters to hundreds of 13,14,15 year old kids hoping that the 1 or 2 that become legitimate college prospects will show some interest in their school 2-3 years down the line.

If he's still got some developing left then he's going to be highly touted.
From freshman year to my junior year I grew 7 inches and my fastball upped like 15 miles per hour. But I did not start in the mid 70's haha. I ended there.

its not that bad but for a SEC school?
mid 70s is decent but id say for a lefty he would need to end up 88-92 to get some serious SEC consideration.
84-87 is your typical D1 small conference pitcher

If he's mid 70's at 13-14 he can easily get to 90 if he's got some more developing to do with his body and a good pitching coach gets a hold of him.
If he's already 6' 2" and grows facial hair, well then he's almost peaked haha. But those are good starting numbers.
