Can someone explain to me why we seem to have such a hard time with OL recruits?

Every time I look at lists of OL recruits, the top guys’ crystal ball predictions don’t seem to ever have our name beside theirs.

We’ll seem to get like the #10 or so OT or what have you, but it doesn’t seem like we land those top rated recruits on the offensive line with any consistency.

It seems like that group is the one group where we don’t consistently; why is that?

Top 10 is pretty damn good. We’re talking the whole country.
Regardless, OL evaluation may be the toughest position to do. Then factor in, kids get higher rankings only if they go to showcase events.

Louisiana doesn’t produce a lot of top tackles.

There are very few top tackles in the country and literally everyone is nipping at their heels.

I thought we just won the 2019 Joe Moore award for the best offensive line in college football. Wouldn’t that mean we are recruiting o-linemen okay?

I’m aware, but O has gone and landed guys top guys from all over the nation at different positions, except OL.

What gives? Is Cregg that bad of a recruiter?

No, he just likes the challenge of converting also ran OL recruit who are maligned on this board into NFL draftees.

In HS O-Line can get by a) being the biggest SOB on the field or at least bigger than the D-lineman across from him or b) having outstanding football IQ but not a big ugly frame that can withstand SEC play

As a result, evaluations of OLine is pretty tough. The ones who show flashes of athleticism and technique and have an P5 frame get a TON OF ATTENTION early in the recruiting cycle.

An early question these guys ask is about draft position— our track record hasn’t been great. Continue showcasing an offense that can score at will the narrative will change.

This is hilarious. What makes you think the guys we've recruited can't get to the same level as the guys we just lost? Charles was a low 4*, Magee was a 3*. Cush was a low 3*. Lewis was a 3* out of juco and even lower than that out of high school.

The guys we've recruited the past couple of years are almost all higher rated than the guys we lost.

So we just had the best offensive line in football with mostly 3 & 4 stars, but now you think we need top 5 players to fill their shoes? Come on, bruh.

and those big guys may be too slow for college and not good fundamentals and the high football IQ guys may not be physical enough at the next level so OL really is more of a gamble than any other position imo

Because we have a history of not launching them in the first round. Who was the last guy you remember getting drafted in first? I will tell you the answer--none! Aside from Whitworth and Turner, we do not have anyone who stands out in the NFL. Croots are told this statistic when they vist trash town or Athens. Unless this changes, we will not be attractive for O linemen.

Also, yes, we did win the Moore award but that was essentially due to DLew and Cush taking over as vocal leaders and bringing that energy on the field. Saahdiq and Ingram sure flashed a lot in their freshmen year and looked like one if not both could land in the first
. Unless we start recruiting 5* kids and launching them in the first round, we will have a tough time in recruting star players. Lael was the last 5* that attended LSU but his circumstances blew the chances of him getting drafted in the first.

I didn't notice a problem with our blocking this past year. Moore award winner, with no one highly rated by recruiting services, except for Deculus, as others have noted; and it is a little harder position to evaluate. It is interesting. Apparently coaching may play a lot bigger role in Oline play with average talent to work with than any other position. And easier for Olinemen to fly under the radar than any other position. Not saying 5 star talent isn't coveted, it just isn't the end all.

Actually i agree with Brewhan below. It hasn't been that bad.

Actually, it hasn’t been that bad. Deculus was Top 50 overall recruit in the country. Rosenthal was also a big time prospect at first when he was listed as an offensive lineman, but after he insisted on playing defensive line, his ranking as a defensive tackle plummeted (although it was still a 4-star ranking).

Once he got to LSU, we tried him on the D-line, as we promised him that we would, but he got buried in the depth chart, and our coaching staff had the bright idea to move him back to his natural position — offensive tackle — where he has all the potential in the universe. Seriously, Dare could be an NFL offensive tackle; that’s how high his ceiling is. He is 6’6 - 6’7, 315 with a basketball background and an incredibly quick drop step. Dude could be a first rounder if he works hard enough.

Also, Kardell Thomas and Anthony Bradford have potential to be elite multi-year SEC starters on the interior line.

Brewhan, you nailed it bro, my thoughts exactly. Dare with the right work ethic can become a Pro-bowler, and I think Coach Cregg is the man to help get him there.

Look at the top 10 ranked OTs nationally and see how many are listed as warm for LSU. That has never happened before. Ever! I would be surprised if LSU doesn’t end up with two highly rated 4-5 star offensive tackles this year.

I believe O hit a home run with the hire of Coach Cregg. He appears to be an excellent OL coach and possibly a great OL recruiter. LSU has never been on this many highly rated o-linemen before. He just needs to close on a few. He did a good job last year closing on Dumervil and Hill. And probably would have closed on Crawford if his academics were in order.

Greg Robinson and Cam Robinson were two of the best in the country if not the best and LSU didn’t get either one.....
