When’s the last time we had a coach recruit with tactic like this? We have a hole in a position, boom it’s plugged with a good transfer. The freshman from last years class were exactly what we needed. The freshman this year are fantastic too. He doesn’t just recruit for the stars (unlike some other guy we had), the dude is a masterful tactician with his recruiting.

Last years db haul in the portal may be the most underated haul in tiger history.

That may sound like hyperbole, but It’s the first of its kind.

For years we have had really good recruiting rankings, but often noted that it was light on the lines, and overloaded with skill positions. In one short year, the lines are now loaded!

The answer is probably Saban

Les and O were great at getting guys but we would have these huge holes at positions.

Now maybe it would have been different with the portal, and it is a little unfair to Les and O.

This.

I honestly think we have the overall best offensive and defensive line combination in the country. Meaning there may be a team with a better offensive line than we have but their defensive line isn’t as good as our or vice versa but no team has a better offensive AND defensive line than us. Not even Georgia.

Les was terrible at getting legit offensive tackles. He always thought you could just plug a typical guard in as a tackle and it would be alright. I mean, sure. If football was still 3 yards and a cloud of dust, you could do that, but that style of football just doesn’t cut it anymore.

As much as people complain about the portal, it really has benefited us more than almost any other team over the last couple of years. Even Kelly would have struggled to fix the mess of a roster he was left with, if not for the portal.

Idk how people keep saying this.

We had an insane run of good OTs.

LT
2005 Whitworth
2006-2009 Ciron Black
2010 Joseph Barksdale
2011 Chris Faulk
2012- Faulk gets hurt and Hurts leaves the teams. This year was a mess
2013-2014 La’el Collins
2015 Hawkins
2016- KJ Malone first really bad LT

Guys like Barksdale and Hawkins played RT for a few years before hoping over. hurts was good in 2011.

OT play was generally pretty good.

It also helps a lot that Louisiana produced back-to-back 5* OTs when Kelly got here.

True, but lsu wouldn’t have been down to 39 players because that many wouldn’t sit out a year under the old rules. Portal cuts both ways.

Even saban called him one of the last “tacticians” left in the sport. We’re in good hands with CBK and staff on any recruiting trail.

talent recognizes talent. It always amazed me how Saban managed to somehow pluck a kid from Louisiana we really needed just about every year. That's how you win 7 in a row against LSU

Listen to yourself. It used to be against the rules. No team ever had a coach like this because it was impossible.

Kelly didn’t suddenly become a great recruiter. He is just a smart, competent guy who is at one of the top football programs in the country, and he has money to spread around like almost no other coaches in college ball. Same with Jay Johnson. Jay just put together the best class in college baseball history - transfers and high school. A large part of the reason is that we outspent everyone else.

The portal hasn’t really been a thing for very long.

Orgeron was/is totally incapable of managing a major program. Nobody will trust him to that responsibility.

Miles stepped on his member, and he got real lethargic, with a very bad attitude. Good riddance to both.

While I agree with you about baseball, that simply just isnt true with Kelly. Yes the rules have changed a bit, but there's something to be said about managing the salary 'cap' if you will. Every treasure chest has a bottom. That's what separates the Jimbos/Napiers of the world from the Saban, Smart, Kelly crowd

Amen. You don't chase stars, you chase talent. Kelly is a good evaluator of talent at positions. He knows what he has, and what he needs. 18 5 star receivers do you no good if you don't have a safety that can cover.

With Les, it sometimes felt like he was more interested in how high the class ranked than whether it made the team better. I am sure booster pressure had a lot to do with that.

O was definitely star struck.

Les couldn't recognize QB talent for some reason and O, who I love, is a bit like Hallman was at Southern Miss, where Farve made ding dong Hallman look great enough to get the LSU job, Bureaux was what made O look like a genius, for a moment. Kelly seems to know how to handle roster management to the point, we are the 5th best position of winning a Natty THIS season as projected by Las Vegas.
