It’s not how much he plays, it’s the position he plays. Hes a nose, usually faces double teams. His primary job is to keep the linebackers clean

which is not something Baker's scheme is generally known for... typically the DT are told to get after the QB and encourage to provide pass rush and create interior pressure...

this guy is a space eater, so not really sure how well he fits what Baker normally runs... guess we'll see...

For the 3-tech that is true. Not for the 1.

i understand all that... but Baker's scheme doesn't usually include a traditional NT, which is what this guy is... in the past, if you look at his teams, he's used smaller, quicker DTs that can create a pass rush and get to the QB with interior pressure... maybe Baker is changing scheme, dunno... but given his track record, this guy doesn't really fit what Baker's scheme usually is

What do you think Guillory’s role was last year?

We played a lot of 4-3 towards the end of the year, with a 3 and a 1. Of course packages change on down and distance, but keeping it as basic as possible, the 1’s job is to occupy guard and center, split the double if possible, but allow linebacker to flow to ball

Baker can use him a bunch regardless of schemes.

He's on field for goal line, short down and distance, maybe he can mix up and keep 3 DL with 4 LBs on field for a bit.

Maybe the opposing center is small, Mitchell can then abuse early in game, then bring the speed on field in 3rd / 4th.

Maybe he drops 15lbs...Baker is pretty fluid with his schemes...he'll use the big boy

again, i understand football... i'm not questioning what roles and assignments a traditional 3 tech and 1 tech are... i know what they do... i'm saying that traditionally in Blake Baker's system, DTs are taught to get to create interior pressure.. they aren't just a place holder to allow someone else to do a job... they both are to get after the QB and create as much havoc on the interior as possible... it's not to eat space for LBs... we'd be running more 3-4 or 3-3-5 if that was the case...

perhaps... i'm just pointing out that this guy is not a guy that Baker generally employs in his defense... typically, he uses DTs that are generally longer, leaner, quicker... again, maybe he's changing something up, dunno...

You have a space eater 1 tech in a 4-3 or 4-2-5 look no problem. It’s just another tool in the tool bag for Baker. He usually uses stunts and plays games with the front make up for the lack of size of his 1 tech. He won’t have to do that with Guillory or Mitchell. Landing Mitchell is just giving a defensive guru more toys to play with.

again, i know what you can have... i'm saying in the past, that's not what Baker has traditionally done... the man himself said that his style is vertical, one gap defense, creating havoc in the backfield, where DT are encouraged to get after the QB, not just eat blocks.. that's his own words, not mine..

again, maybe he's changing something in his scheme that uses a guy like this... ALL I"M SAYING is that in the past Baker defenses, this is not the type of DT he uses... why some of y'all are taking it as if i'm saying this dude is garbage or something, i dunno... that's not what i'm saying, at all... don't know much about the young man, other than he's big... i'm just pointing out that he's not the typical Baker DT, that's it...

Something to consider- he was the DC at Miami before NIL and then at Mizzou, which isn’t a premium recruiting destination. His scheme might change a bit since we can recruit the kind of size to man an NT role.

Not sure why you are getting downvotes. I agree with you.

Baker must be interested in having a monster like this in his tool bag or he wouldn't have him in for a visit. Mitchell is not a 3 down player in Baker's scheme, but certainly is a valuable piece in multiple situations. Hope he commits to us.

Looks like you are lucky. Shea just put in his pick for him to LSU. Wouldn’t be surprise if it’s announced today.
